I have a 647 in 17 hmr. Looking for a way to shoot 17 hm2.
Does the idea of taking a model 617 cylinder, line-boring the chambers (possibly just the throats to the shoulder), relining them with a 17 cal barrel liner and rechambering have any legs?
Has anyone done this? Are there any smith's out there willing to try?
I think it could be done. I really wish S&W would sell blank cylinders though.
I plan to line a model 19 cylinder to 22 someday for usee in a model 53 as they are longer than regular K 22 cylinders
Ream chambers to 25/64 (.3906) which is a standard reamer and just over the size of a 357 chamber. Then make lengths of tube with 7/32 bores (.2187) and an of of .3900) out of 4140. Warm up the cylinder to about 400 expanding it and its holes, and cool the tubes with dry ice shrinking them. Slip tubes into holes and let the become shrink fit. Make them over length them after it is cooled, machine off the excess. Then use a 22 lr reamer on each chamber. In the case of a 17 start out with pilot holes in the tubes slightly under sized. If you started with a 22 cylinder you could just take the chambers out to say 5/16"
If I could get a blank N frame cylinder I would make a round similar to a 30 Herret only shorter. 30-30 case with the neck moved back and the walls straightened out.
Well a slightly smaller case capacity than a 44 mag, but more cylinder wall, firing a 30 caliber bullet. Should be able to get some interesting velocities out of say 125 grain bullets. Kind of an over grown 22 jet with a better case.
Or make it in the current 6.5 caliber as it is the current love child caliber.
