S&W Highway Patrolman RE-assembly
Hi folks,
I have a S&W Highway Patrolman .357, 4 inch, well used, SN S244xxx. Well I have it in pieces. I got a new cylinder stop (it fits into the notches of the cylinder, in case I misnamed it) and a nice wide spur target hammer.
Well that cylinder stop uses a little bitty spring. How do you get that spring back in??? Now the cylinder stop does not have any hole in it, solid, and it seems to be one heck of a tight fit to get that spring in.
Any suggestions will be helpful!

If the new cylinder stop doesn't have a hole for the spring, you either have the wrong cylinder stop or a defective one. The other possibility is that you have a five screw revolver, and the cylinder stop spring is in a cavity behind the additional screw in the front of the trigger guard.
I believe yours was built after the trigger guard screw was eliminated so perhaps you have the wrong era cyl. stop??
By the way, the cylinder stop and the new hammer are not considered "drop in" parts and will likely need fitting.

Well when I opened it up the HP the OLD one didn't have any indent. It was solid. My Highway Patrolman is a three screw. Maybe someone put the old style stop into it. Or I mislaid the original stop and I got the wrong type.
Is there supposed to be a cavity in the frame for the spring? There seems to be a small cavity but just no where near enough room to squeeze in that spring.
Fortunately for me the gunshop I go to has a whole tray of S&W parts. Several cylinder stops and some do have holes in them.
I'll check that tomorrow.

I recall seeing a tiny spring under that front screw on my S Highway Patrolman a couple of years back when I was breaking it down for cleaning. It was my first (still is) S&W revolver with a screw in the front of the trigger guard.
It fell out unexpectedly, and I had to review a couple of schematics to figure where it went back. I've not had the cylinder stop out however, so I'm not much help there. I pulled up an S model schematic of Numrich or Brownells, and it was a big help on reassembly. Good luck with it.
Someone with more experience will drift by shortly and be of more help.

Got it back together. Used a cylinder stop that had a hole for the spring. Found out some of those cylinder stop I had were for K frames... not as wide and as a result would sometimes not catch the cylinder!
All is right in the world now. Just need to find a Tyler-T N frame square butt grip adapter!

K,L and N frames use the same cylinder stop. Perhaps it was just wear on the used ones?

I measured them with a caliper. At least 3 of them were thinner, including the one that would not pop up to stop the cylinder sometimes.
