Default Wider Rear sight for 586/686

I like the sight picture on my 8-3/8” 629. The barrel length puts the front sight far enough away from the rear that there is a little daylight on each side of the front sight, inside the rear sight. I hope that makes sense. It really helps my aging eyes, and It helps me shoot this revolver well.(Along with the ridiculously long barrel..lol)

My 586 and 686 are 6” and 4”, respectively. I do not get that same “daylight” inside the rear sight opening. I‘D like to replace the rear sight blades with those that have a wider notch. I suppose I could get out a file and attempt to widen them, but...

Is anyone aware of these being offered? It looks like Brownell’s only offers higher or lower notched blades...?

Thanks in advance.

The easier solution may be a narrower front sight. A lot of competition shooters are using a .100 wide front, often with a fiber optic. The extra daylight on the sides makes it faster to line up out of the holster and between shots. The standard width on all S&W revos is .125.

As Protocall posted above, the standard width is .125" and I don't think a wider one is made.

So filing is your best option. Pick up a small square Swiss file. Make one side 'safe' by grinding the teeth off nice and flat. That way you can file both sides of the notch with the safe side down, w/o filing the bottom of the notch. Touch up the filed areas with cold blue.

I am an old guy, whose eyes don't focus as well as they used to, this is exactly what I do, a little extra light around that front sight does help !

Widening the rear sight with a file is a tried and true, long established, inexpensive method to improve speed and precision.

Don’t imagine that the manufacturers have much basis for the dimensions of their sights other than tradition.

Thanks guys. I did Just as recommended above...on both. I figured I can always replace the blade if I screwed up. They came out really well.

I’ll give them a test at the range tomorrow.

Another vote for using a file to open up the rear sight notch.
