I've got quite a random collection of family firearms starting with an @1820s percussion, original 1858 Remington, Civil war saber and artillery short sword/powder measure, on up through stainless S&W 3rd gens and Ruger rimfires.

I'm looking for an appropriate wipe down/long term storage lubricant for those not used.

Most are in the safe, in the downstairs garage. Not humid, no sweating concrete, LOTS of dessicant in the safe, usually in the 50s during the winter. Just want something that won't go gummy or varnish. Some are in silicone stockings in the safe, some are in socks, in cases, in the safe. A few in hard cases next to it.

Anything stand out. I thought about BreakFree Collector, but anything better? Synthetic motor oil? No, no RIG or Cosmoline!

Eezzox. When I first moved to Morehead City NC on the coast all my guns started to rust. Gun store recommended it. Bought it and have used it for 20 years. On all guns & fishing equipment. Works fantastic.

The absolute BEST time proven product I have ever used for long term storage is Rig Universal Grease. Been using it for 40+ years and always works perfectly! Easy to remove as well! Brownell's has it. EXCELLENT!

There is always Renaissance Wax. Not knocking the above products either.

LONG TERM PROCEDURE I USE:

1) completely disassemble gun for total access
2) clean all parts inside and out - dry gun after cleaning
3) a coat of RIG Universal Grease everywhere
4) reassemble gun
5) make sure you did not miss any parts with the Rig - in & out
6) wrap gun in two layers of waxed paper - mold to gun's contour
7) wrap gun in Aluminum foil and mold to gun so size is minimal
8) store for as long as you need to in a cool dry place

NOTE: leave the grips off the gun when doing this procedure - store separately

PROCEDURE TO REACTIVATE:

1) unwrap gun and completely disassemble
2) thoroughly clean with solvent - I use Hoppes #9 - dry gun
3) reassemble while lightly lubricating with normal gun oil
4) check function - you are now back in business

RIG rag and a container of RIG grease to freshen up the rag every so often.

I use Kellogg’s professional products pure silicone applies wit treated lambs wool. However I heard of a guy the other day that sprays handguns down with REM oil and then vacuum seals them in a food storage bag system. Sounds slick

Ezzoxx here also. Great stuff. Been using it 10 years or so.

I can't say if my experience is typical, but I've had blued guns in storage for about 20 years in foam-lined cases (infamous for trapping moisture and rusting guns) and took them out after that time and there was no rust. The only thing I did was wipe them down with Break Free CLP before putting them away.

The previous suggestions in this thread all sound like good strategies to me.

I have used Marvel mystery oil For over 40 years and never had a problem. Nice thing about it is that it has a of other uses. I learned about it from another gun show dealer

For corrosion control only WD 40 Specialist. Easy and cheap
Desiccants do little to nothing. How they work is they capture moisture and then they sit in the enclosed space soaking wet holding in the water.

RIG applied with a Rig-Rag. Applied properly, it is less offensive and messy than any oil and works better. I was taught to use it by a man that collected engraved German combo guns that was high dollar stuff.

Birchwood Casey Barricade, formally Sheath has been my favorite for every day and long term storage.Easy and not greasy. Then, you guys got me started on Renaissance Wax and I use it almost exclusively.

I have used Breakfree Collector for about 4 yrs and I am very happy with the product. To be honest I've used plain old Breakfree CLP since the 90's as my primary gun lube product on everything. Never had a complaint with CLP either. I've tried a few that lubed just as good but were NOT as good at protection.

Been using Triflow for about 25 years now. It's a breakfree clp product similar to the one AUG uses.
