Default Center Pin too far Rearward

I am installing a normal length (over 2”) center pin and ejector rod in a model 10-7 that originally had a snub barrel. I assembled it and the center pin protrudes much too far to the rear. Are there any other internal parts that need to be changed besides the extractor rod and center pin?

There is a collar (called the "shoulder") on the center pin that controls it's degree of protrusion. You have the wrong center pin.

Ok, thanks. I was under the assumption they were all the same if they were for barrels over 2”. How do I avoid purchasing a center pin just like the one I have?

Is this an older model revolver? I'm not certain, but in the older guns, I believe the location of the "stop" that the shoulder of the center pin engages with inside the extractor is different on the shorter barrels than the longer barrels.

The cylinder and frame is a 10-7 and the center pin and extractor rod is out of a 10-5.
How do I avoid purchasing a center pin just like the one I already have?

There are two different "full length" center pins, the older one, which has a shorter segment (approx. .700") behind the shoulder, like the one in the photo below. The other pin, the stainless one on the bottom in the photo is also a full sized pin, but has a longer segment (.835") behind the shoulder or "collar".

Rather than trying to find a "new" one from say Ebay, you could just cut and re-profile the breech end of the center pin to the length you need.....assuming of course that it's the right length at the other end, where it interfaces with the front locking bolt.

If it is the correct length at the front (muzzle end) when assembled, and you decide to alter it, be sure not to overheat the pin when cutting or grinding.

If you still want to buy a replacement.

OPTIONS:

1. Order one from S&W by the guns serial #, if they still have it in inventory.

2. Order from a reputable source, example: Brownells lists it here: SMITH & WESSON CENTER PIN, OVER 2-1/2" BARREL, SS | Brownells

3. When you find one to buy, confirm* with the seller: that the length is the same to the collar as yours after subtracting .135" (the difference between .700" and .835"). And add the length of the pin from the rear of collar to the front of the extractor rod. Does your pin go to the end of the extractor? If yes, then you have that dimension already.

*Always a good idea (standard procedure) when a part's dimensions are critical.
