Bead blasting question
Has anyone sent a S&W revolver back to S&W factory for a bead blast to "clean up" some discoloration on the frame? What did they charge you? Were you satisfied with their work? Any info you can supply me will be deeply appreciated...Thank you...Roger

I've never heard of that. Does S&W even do bead blasting? Just from my experience, bead blasting is all or nothing, you just don't bead blast a small area of a gun, you have to do the whole thing, else the finish won't be uniform. And I have bead blasted a great many guns.

Funny, but I was just wondering the same thing this week. I just picked up a new (to me) stainless pistol that needs the absolute slightest "clean-up" of surface marks as you call it. But I don't want to go the Scotch-Brite route and impart a grain to it... nor do I want to polish it and end up with a shiny effect.

I think it's all or nothing with the mothership... and I haven't found a gunsmith willing to do a very light bead blasting job.  I think this is something you pretty much have to do for yourself.

Thanks for the info...I recently purchased a rare 610 3" that has various surface spots under and around the grips...other than this the gun is pristine...I have seen these spots on other revolvers from this series...not sure what causes it...I'll see what Smith can do...Thanks...Roger

Bead blasting is a simple operation if you have access to the equipment and the correct blasting media. A big if.

$170 to bead blast a gun is a rip off. My gunsmith did mine for $40. Hell for $170 you could buy everything you need to do it yourself.

Roger,
Is the original finish a bead blast finish?
Just ask the factory what they can do to restore the original finish.

Seems like I spent about $150 total for a sand blast cabinet from HF and the secret sauce blasting media from McMaster Carr. I think I have done 4 slides now, looks just like factory.
I already had an air compressor and shop vacuum.

That is a good question. I am not sure I have seen a S&W revolver that was bead blasted. I believe all of the stainless 3rd Gen S&W semis are blasted though.

Yes from what I can tell the original finish is a bead blast finish...the revolver is a 610 3"...there were a whole series of revolvers with this finish...
