Gun damage?

Hello all. I’m new here so please bear with me. I’ve got a dumb question. I just bought this 642 revolver and I haven’t shot it but, I’ve fiddled around with it and noticed that I caused this mark in the picture. When messing around with open and closing the chamber I’ve “forced it shut.” Meaning that I’ve pushed it closed. Didn’t think it would cause damage but, I noticed this indent it caused. Is this normal wear and tear or did I break or damage something?

That's perfectly normal. All revolvers have that track.

That’s usual wear mark but not into stainless. Might be a little much for one closing on new gun. Then again it may have a really stiff spring or gummed up so it’s no retracting properly.

If you're talking about that little groove, it's normal wear. It's typically self-limiting.

Am I experiencing deja vu or didn't we recently have another thread on this exact topic not too long ago?

You might want to put a thin layer of Tetra Grease on that area. As others have said it's a normal wear area. Enjoy the shooter and don't be afraid to ask questions here!

Your 642 has alloy frame so may be more noticeable than with steel frame.

Can't really compare a stainless frame gun to the aluminum / coated 642. What the original poster pictured looks like all of them I have ever seen. That coating isn't very robust.

That mark is normal and was no doubt there when you bought it; from factory testing, etc. It has been made on almost every Hand Ejector since 1896 when the first was produced. I say almost because a few model HEs have ctr pins with spring tension to the front instead of to the rear. It's just less obvious on a steel gun until after years of use.

With cyl swung out, put something hard and flat against the center pin (which makes that mark) and push it forward. Verify that it goes in far enough to be flush with the extractor surface. If it does, no worries. If it isn't, stone it flush; it's contacting the recoil shield with undo pressure and gouging the shield.
