The correct way to release the slide is to pull the slide back, which allows the slide stop to disengage, then ease the slide forward if lowering it onto an empty chamber or just let go if you are chambering a round from the magazine.

The correct way to release the slide is to either pull the slide back or use the slide release. Either way is fine.

How are you using the slide release? I use my left thumb. When I insert a mag, my left thumb is in a good position to hit the slide release. I only use my right thumb if closing the slide one-handed. May require a bit of a grip shift to get enough leverage. Of course, this is assuming you're right-handed.

It may just need some breaking in. Give it some time. Use it normally. Or you can pull the slide back to release it. Try both methods. You may prefer one over the other.

That slide release/lock should work in and become easier in time.
The compacts have more spring tension, especially when brand new. Put some rounds on it and it should wear in nicely.
If it is still giving you trouble after a few hundred rounds, clean up the lever interface where it engages the slide. There may be a lip/burr/roughened area that needs to be touched up. Just go slowly with a very fine 600 grit paper or stone. Test it out as you go, it won't take much. Don't go too far!

I know there is debate about the use of the slide stop, mostly from Glock based trainers. Releasing the slide with your support hand by engaging the slide release/lock is just fine IMHO... and usually faster. I prefer it as long as it is consistent. If it isn't consistent make it so.

I would assume you already oiled it before shooting he gun - but if not I'd do so. It should break in but if not - call S&W for a Call Tag.
