The purpose is, it's a replacement slide stop and ejector, if you need one.

Numrich will answer your questions. Also ask them if it's a S&W part or newly reproduced by someone else and that's why it's in the white.

You'll have to go to a gunsmith that re-blues and have him drop it in the tank the next time he blues something.

Before buying the Numrich part in the raw, call S&W and find out if they have any finished ones - it will make you life easier. If not, Hondo's advise ^^^^^^ is good.

Not all of a mfg'rs parts for a gun are mfg'rd by that maker.

Many are outsourced from smaller mfg'rs and short run shops.
It's just cheaper to have a specialty shop make certain parts and buy them in bulk than to set up for yourself and make them.
Springs and some complicated metal stamping/formed parts are commonly done that way.

These 'unfinished' parts may be from an outsourced mfg'r. They may be over-runs that S&W turned away for any number of reasons,,off spec, wrong material, or just didn't need them, ect.

The outsourced firm then offers them to parts dealers, Numrich usually, to gain back at least some of their investment in time and materials.

..and they may be surplus stock right from S&W as well.
Sometimes poor inventory control leaves the parts & service dept with a large # of certain parts over time. Certain ones just keep getting reordered when there are plenty of the same in stock but no one cares to search for them or knows they are there.
This was a problem at the Winchester Custom Shop before it went under.
Thousands of certain parts in stock for the 21, but no record of it. Then they repeatedly went ahead and ordered a new supply every time they thought they needed another one.

Maybe S&W is just cutting down on M41 parts based on calls for repairs.
Get rid of any extra stock. Sell it to Numrich.
They probably have an open account and a big box in the parts dept labeled Numrich for the un-needed parts..Monthly pick-up by the Numrich-Mobile.

That part, the slide stop / ejector, is the weak link in the entire M41 design. Compare a M41 to the Walther Olympia and Hämmerli model 200 lineage and you can see that S&W blatantly copied the design, with a few changes.
The Walther- Hämmerli version uses a separate slide stop and ejector, both machined out of high grade steel. The S&W part is a much inferior design that is also a much inferior stamping.
The Hämmerli 208 is noted as a particularly reliable gun, capable of hundreds of thousands of rounds of accurate trouble-free use.

The problem with the S&W part is that the twin functions are counter to each other. There are also a couple different designs to the S&W part, where the notch for ejecting is in a different location. No doubt this is intended to correct the many failure to eject jams that plague the M41.
Perhaps the "in the white" part is oversized so that a gunsmith can fit it for reliable performance?
I'd like to see a picture of the Numrich part, especially of the ejection notch.

Jim

Does it come with the spring attached? If not, you have to get the little spring and attach it and that would be a major pain.

Take a look at the part at Brownells to understand my comments.
