I am looking into installing the Wilson Combat spring kits into my J and K frame smiths. Any thoughts on how well the kits are and what lb trigger return springs I should use?

The Wilson kits are good quality. Get the mainspring in, then see which trigger return spring you like. Try them all. Some want the lightest action, some want the snappiest return, some want a compromise.

When installing and evaluating......please remember not to cycle the action under mainspring tension with the sideplate off.

Pure speculation on my part, but I believe most, if not all the kits offered by various vendors are manufactured by Wolff.

Brownells has spring kits too.

I have used WC spring kits in several s&w revolvers. The only one it didn't work in is my 617. I expected it but still wanted to try.

While you are at it, why not clean and lube the action... Just look at how dirty with shavings mine was when new.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that too. It actually helps a lot. I usually do it when when I first buy a revolver then after around 1000 or so dry fires .

I don't know who makes the Wilson kits, but I have played with the Wolff kits. I always opt for a full power mainspring, and wouldn't go any lower than a 13 pound rebound spring.

13 pounds is the sweet spot, and anything lower will noticeably slow the action. Any weight but the factory weight will slow the action, but lower than 13 pounds and you notice it.

That is my S&W 642 .38+P 5-shot J-Frame. Still have it, however, I replaced it with another small Frame 23oz. Kimber K6S 6-shot in Stainless. FWIW, IMO having a 23oz. small frame is about as light as one should go. Just my $0.02 worth.

And after Texas started allowing open carry, I started going with an M&P M2.0 Full Size.

I have never used a spring kit in any of my Smiths; they always hone done over time. However, I have used the Wilson spring kits on my Rugers. Rugers always in my experience have very very heavy triggers. My Ruger SA Blackhawk started out with a factory trigger at 5 pounds, the Wilson trigger spring reduced it down to 2 1/2 pounds. My Ruger GP100 in 44 Special started out with a factory trigger at 4 - 4.5 pounds, the Wilson trigger spring brought it down to 3 pounds.

I can't speak about the Wilson kit. I had a gunsmith install a Wolff spring kit in my model 29 that I use for shooting bowling pins. After much testing for reliability, I ended up with a 15 pound rebound spring. I chose to use the Wolff Type 1, Factory Standard Power Rib Mainspring. The gunsmith also polished the proper parts. The double action pull now averages 7.48 pounds.

I have to say I am pleased with the spring kit and work that was done.
