Well I took a couple of model 10 cylinders from my J&G Gunsmith special projects and made 2 9mm/38 special cylinders.
First I lined them up in mill using a spud like in my 327 project thread and reamed them to 9mm. That just barely shaves off any material at the top of the chamber. Then I stuck the cylinder in my rotary table and used a 1/4 4 flute end mill and went down .037 (clips are .035). I had used a scribe to mark the outer edge of thee clips so I made a pass to that and then moved in to just touch the edge of each ratchet tooth. Then comes the nervous part. You have to take the mill down between each set of ratchet teeth to the same depth.

I fit one to this 10-7 that I added adjustable sights too and installed a 4" model 15 barrel. You can fire the 9mms in the clips and 38 specials will still headspace off the outside ledge and fire.





I see in the photo that I did not seat the brass all the way but it does and the other cylinder operates fine mounted in a frame.

Now to find some of that cheap 9mm ammo everyone was talking about. Haha ha ha. All I could find in town was a bag of 100 pieces of brass.

But, someday it might be handy as this is the first gun I have ever had that would fire a 9mm.

But does the .38 Special case swell near the head where it would appear to be unsupported by any chamber?

You might not see it with the naked eye... but you would feel it immediately in the press lever when resizing the brass.

The 38 case doesn't swell where the moonclip is, but above that, where the chamber is bigger for the 9mm case, it does a little bit with target loads, a lot with magnum loads.

If you want something really different, try reaming the chambers for 9x18 Makarov. It would require a rebore of the barrel (or a new one) in 9.3mm, but 9x18 has the same rim diameter and uses the same moonclips as 9x19.

TK Custom will cut your K frame cylinder, give you 10 clips and a moon clip tool for $350. Says no 9mm+p

Just the clips (10) are $80, and they are the only place I have found 6 shot 9mm clips for a K frame.

I am obviously not a 9mm fan, but I had the cylinders, and the tools. Never hurts to have a gun in a real common caliber. I had already bought the clips because I want to use then on a gun I made up that shoots 22TCMs They are loose on the TCM because they are based on 223 brass and a bit smaller. But, I am going to split the arms on a couple of these and form them a bit to get them to grip the TCMs. I can use them now, but the brass falls out of them if you jiggle them at all. The same gun fires 22 Harvey Kay Chucks, a shortened 22 hornet with the case walls blown out to make it more bottle necked.

Funny thing. I don't own a 22 magnum either. I have an XP100 in 221 Fireball, a model 53 in 22 Jet, and the Harvey/TCM gun

I’m not a 9mm fan either but that’s probably because I haven’t shot the right gun. Stick some in a K frame and I’d love them. My 610 really opened my eyes to the benefits of moon clips.

BTW a 9 mm is .391 at the baseand a 38 is .379, but the 9mm is tapered and is .380 at the neck which is about the middle of a 38 so very little of the chamber is oversized and only by .012. We will will see, But I won't be doing the +P thing with this anyway. I have enough magnums if I want more. In fact I will probably put the 38 special cylinder in it unless I want to shoot some 9s. I don't know what I will fit the second 9mm cylinder to.
