The previous owner filed off the front sight. It is shooting about 3 inches high at 25 yards. I have run it through a couple calculators and seems it needs about .020 added on top. I first thought it would be nice to have a gold bead on there but I think they are too big. I thought I would drill a shallow dimple and super glue one in there. But that might be too tall. I hear some people use JB weld to build it up and file it to fit. Not sure me doing it would look too good when I got done. It is an import I picked up pretty cheap and don't want to have to have a gunsmith to do it. Any other ideas? I guess if I make my dimple deep enough the bead wouldn't be too much.

I've actually had pretty good luck just putting the sight in a smooth-jaw machinist's vise and squeezing the sight a bit narrower. the displaced metal will make the sight taller.
Otherwise a replacement barrel might just be the easiest solution, often you can have a good one for ~$50. Of course you will need the tools or a 'smith to make the change.
If you reload then adjusting charge and projectile weight could get you a 3" shift pretty easily.

Ron is it a bull barrel or tapered? If a bull barrel you have enough "meat" to dove tail a sight of your choosing on there. If you look in some of the 80-present and gunsmithing forums you'll see some projects people have done recently with dovetailing a front sight on fixed sight k frames. Lots of options out there.

Funny you mentioned JB Weld. I just put some on the front sight of my Taurus 605. Want to get it to shoot more to the right. It actually went on easy. I've filed it but haven't shot it. 96 degrees here today. Waiting for a cool down.

do you use bullseye hold or 6 o clock hold.

Before you get to cutting or shaving any metal try this. Go to your local wally world to the cosmetics section and get a bottle of white and bright orange nail polish. Try not to blush when you take them to the cash register. Once home paint the top of the front sight with the white nail polish after you have cleaned off all the oil, dirt and other contaminates. Once the white polish has dried, paint the white spot with the orange polish. That should give you a .020 build up and make the front sight easier to see on a dusky evening. The more layers you paint on the sight the longer it takes to dry so be sure you give each coat plenty of time to dry. After two coats it takes nearly 12 hours. After 3 coats it takes nearly 24 hours to dry. If you can find some glow-in-the-dark polish you might want to add some on the back side of the sight to aid you in a dark environment.

Mine is a bull barrel. I figured I could dove tail it but didn't want to spend that much. Same with a replaced barrel. I like a 6 o'clock hold. But 4 or 5 inches is too much. I can still hit with it pretty good like it is but would like the sight a little closer. I can make a water bottle dance around on the 25 yard berm after a few shots to adjust to it. When I get some primers I will mess with different loads. Most of my loads are 3.2 gr Bullseye with a 149 gr DEWC. It shoots great except for having to adjust to the sight and my old eyes. The gun is mechanically like new. It just had some wear on the blue and some pitting.

The smash in the vise looks like an easy method. My vise has a diamond pattern on the jaws. Not sure if I want that on my sight. I guess I could sand that a bit and some bluing to cover it might work. Or put thin shims between the vise and sight.

You could try some 125 grain. Three inches high wouldn't bother me. Three inches low would be a problem.

There are smooth jaw inserts available for vises.

Just a couple smooth hardened bits of metal to take the waffle out. You could make it work with a pair of grade-8 nuts and use the smooth side of the nut as your jaw insert.
For older half-moon sight guns, I've used the shaft of a bolt to get a rounded profile down low during the squeeze. Usually you can see a slight localized deformation, but it's very subtle if done carefully.

I took it out a couple days ago and put it on a stand. It shot right to sights. I guess I was jerking it down when I pulled the trigger. I guess i need to work on that now.
