Model 40 hammer in a model 36
I was considering bobbing a hammer for my model 36 no dash, but had the idea of installing a model 40 (Centennial) hammer instead as I don't have the proper tools at the moment (Dremel, vise). I searched and found a prior thread that suggested this would work. I imagine keeping the hammer block in place would still be recommended?

AFAIK it won't work. Bob the hammer or better yet, bob another one from the same model that you can buy online. This way if you ever want to restore it - you can easily do so.

I have installed Model 49 Bodyguard hammers in Model 36s. They are a drop in.
I haven't tried a Model 40 hammer, but the first thing that comes to mind is that you will not have a single action mode of shooting. But that may not matter to you. Otherwise I can't imagine a reason why it won't work. It's basically just a J frame hammer w/o any kind of hammer spur.

Yup, would definitely be going DAO. How do you like the bodyguard hammer on the 36? I thought about that too and should look for some pics, or if you wouldn't mind posting one. I imagine it still protrudes past the frame a bit, but not nearly as much as full hammer. I'll probably just bob a 36 hammer, but was an idea.

My photo is on Fototime which crashed and burned. But if send an email address by PM I can email it. But not thru the forum email which still requires a photo hosting service.
The 49 hammer is not as unobtrusive as a bobbed hammer, but much more so than a standard 36 hammer.

I'd like to see a photo if you get that set up.
I dropped a bodyguard hammer into a nickel Model 36 and it worked fine.

Here’s a picture of the bodyguard hammer in a Model 36. It dropped in, more or less. It’s been awhile. Might have made a few adjustments but nothing significant.
I like it. It's easier on the pants for ankle carry and a bit less "stabby" for AIWB.

The early 317 snubs had a kind of Bodyguard hammer, no? Look for pix. I HATED the feel, it would draw blood on my thumb just cocking it.
The Centennial style pistols IIRC don't have hammer blocks? Might make their hammers different in some dimension...

There must be a fair number of early 36 hammers whose spurs are already broken or already bobbed available. Unmolested ones are almost impossible to find. I would suggest you keep your good one and find one already bobbed to install.

I know it’s not exactly on point, but this is just sitting in my office. You can find them with a spurless hammer and DAO internals from the factory. Old school Model 36 with matte finish and DAO.
But,I still like the idea of a hammer swap for a different approach.
