Default Model 649-2 plugged hole identification

Can anyone tell me what the plugged hole beneath the cylinder release on this model 649-2 is for? It's not present on my own 649-2, or other images I've seen.

I believe that's the base of the hammer stud. Yours has one too, it's probably just less visible.

I have a 36 that the hammer pin was broken and replaced. Same thing
