Hi,
Checked the search option; but, no information. Does anyone here have a source for a well-known gunsmith who converts square butt L-frames (same as K-frame?) to round butt configuration? Hamilton Bowen does not.
Thanks,
ric

The modification will never look like a factory job since you have to remove some from the front og the grip and that buggers up the hole for the mainspring strain screw. I also qustion the economics - you should consider selling your and purchasing the gun you desire. I purchased a Model 27 with 8 3/8" bbl which had been so conversted. I got it for $350 and it's a great shooter.

Magnaport, Mt. Clemens, MI did a round butt conversion on an N-frame revolver for me. I'm pleased with their work and can recommend them.

I did my model 64 with a bench grinder, some sandpaper cloth and a dremel. It doesn't look too bad but not factory because of the strain screw for the mainspring.
It was a cheap beater so I didn't mind trying my hand on this one. I wouldn't do it for a nicer gun.
Hogue grips make even a square butt feel pretty nice so check them out before you spend big money on a gunsmith.

It's not too difficult to make the strain screw look correct. You can modify the screw, or properly counter-bore it and replace the screw.

Thinking about doing this myself. Would love to pick up a 681 and convert it to an L frame LadySmith.

I've done a couple of my own, plus several for friends. I use a bench grinder, then a dremel and a lot of hand polishing. If you have a grooved backstrap it won't look original but it feels better to me. It takes about an hour for the metal removal, and a couple hours to dress it up.

Old timer without a web site, etc and sometimes hard to get on the phone, but he's been around a long time and is has done lots of custom work, cartide conversions, etc on S&W and Rugers.
He took an S&W Model 17 of mine and cut the barrel to 5" and round butted it. Guys at the last collectors meeting in No. Olmsted had a chance to see it, and there was another guy there with a .32 conversion and shortended barrel from him.

The 681 donor gun has arrived. Barrel is chopped, the butt is roughed out and I'm working on the shroud right now. Will try to get some pics up when I'm done.

Looking good. What kind of front sight are you gonna install? A gold shotgun bead would look good and might work well.

This should be a given but I'll say it anyway. Be Very Careful that you don't grind away part of the serial number.

model 10 grip rework
I did my model 10 "beater" . the screw is just the old one with head cut off and slot done with a dremel. I bought grips and used them for the shape. no problem with #'s, in fact had room for a 10x32 t.p.i. swivel stub to hold a ring. just had to have a gun with a lanyard ring.
