Antique S&W cylinder pin-nut removal
Greetings,
I am sure this part has a real name but just cant think of it now. Trying to remove this little nut - type part that sits inside the extractor star, with two slots in it. The gun is an antique S&W Safety Hammerless 2nd model. Need to transplant one to a gun thats missing one. Is there are readily available tool that would do the job or will I have to make one? Have tried various needle nose pliers etc but the part is stuck. Or left hand threaded.....any advice would be very welcome!

Yes you can buy those 'spanner' type screwdrivers. Brownell's etc.
Most of us just file a notch in the correct size blade screw driver or screwdriver tip from one of those sets with a handle and interchangeable tips.
I have one of those guns, but I have to leave now. Tomorrow I'll determine if mine is left or right hand threads. In the meantime, if you haven't already done so, soak it with Kroil, Breakfree or any penetrating oil you might have on hand.

Well I couldn't get any of the three I have to break loose. But I didn't have time to soak them first. As far as I know they're right hand thread but couldn't confirm it.

OP, it would appear yours is set with red locktite. If this is the case you are not going to get it out without some applied heat. Please check for that with a dental pick or similar.

I believe the red circle you see in the OP's pic was added by the OP to further indicate the part he wants to remove, not red loctite.

First off, I have never tried to remove the star on a top-break S&W, but a few years ago, I bought a vintage M&P revolver that had a loose star. That was the only one I have ever taken apart. As I recall, it was a right-hand thread. Just make sure you remove the star assembly from the cylinder before you try to remove the stud. You may have to put a lot of torque on that stud to break it free and the collar in the rear of the cylinder is quite thin and could strip.

Place empty shells in the cylinder to hold the star when torquing on that nut. Both loosen and tighten.
