Default Substitute Model 60 hammer

Will a S&W Model 649 hammer fit and function in a Model 60? Perhaps another hammer from yet another S&W revolver will fit a Model 60? Double action/single action is preferred.

Yes it’s a drop in. I put a 49 hammer in a 36. Use the the DA sear from your 60 hammer to avoid having to fit the new hammer to your trigger. You’ll have DA and SA.

A model 40 hammer will work but DA only of course and really ugly!

Thats what I use in mine you can still cock it , cant really snag on anything, and isnt going to break of if the gun is ever dropped.

Default Model 60 substitute hammer

Hondo: I removed the original sear from the bobbed hammer and put it back in the spurred hammer. The revolver works fine both DA and SA. The new sear from the spurred hammer went back into the bobbed hammer. It doesn't work. Phooey...
I bought a Model 649 hammer from Numrich. They call it "semi-bobbed" - there is a small checked area to facilitate cocking. Put it into the Model 60 and it works fine!! Did not need any fitting.
The only drawback is the hammer looks like ****. The sides are quite pitted. Is there a good way to clean it up? Sanding, filing, or grinding?
I have not fired it yet with the 649 hammer installed. Perhaps if it works I should leave well enough alone...
