Smile Model 4516 Adventure

I prefer a spur hammer over an un-spurred hammer. Took my 4516 to my local gunsmith (30 miles distance) and left the 4516, replacement spur hammer and struct. When I picked the 4516 up after replacement and went to the range to test fire. Out of a magazine of .45acp FMJ ammo the 4516 would double fire at least once. Returned the pistol to the gunsmith a second time. Picked up the "Repaired" weapon and went to the range to test fire. Now the pistol was D/A only !!. Returned the 4516 a third time and request that the original parts be installed. Gunsmith requested to try repairing it again. Now I am waiting for the gunsmith call and range test it a third time.

After five trips to the gunsmith the Model 4516 now works correctly with the spur hammer. This Model 4516 is a very accurate weapon using 230 grain FMJ ammo

Once, when I was installing a spur hammer on a 5906, the hammer would not hold in single action.

Closer inspection revealed damaged single action notches on the hammer. (Donor gun the hammer came from was probably dropped while cocked and that broke the notches.)

Company I purchased the hammer from apologized and sent me a new hammer and told me to keep the old one.

I installed the replacement hammer and all was fine.

I then ground off the damaged single action notches on the bad hammer, removed the thumb spur, and shaped it into a spurless hammer for a DAO conversion.

Win-win for everybody.

John

Have a spurred hammer on one of my 3913s and my FrankenSmith 6915s (915 upper on a 6906 frame)...... like the single action optional first shot... in case I ever have to take a longer shot. Dickens Drill

Jimmy think I'd be looking for a new gunsmith!!!!!!

JimmyJ, do you get the feeling your guy does not test fire anything? I am glad it is working now. I have a 645 and is one of my favorites. It does not get to go along, however, unless I am wearing a jacket. It has pride of place on the nightstand however.
