Removing rear sight from 2nd gen
I recently acquired a Model 459, that has some finish challenges on the slide and I plan to re-blue it. I have removed 1st gen (lollipop) and 3rd gen sights before, but this one has a different style.
I was going to drive it off from left to right, but after several sharp raps, there was no movement. I thought before I went any further, I'd make sure that there is nothing different about removing this kind of sight.
If it's the same as removing most others, I'll soak it in Kroil.
Thanks all.

Pictures looks like the sight wraps around/over the top of slide so, I don' believe
it will drive off any way? Maybe, remove the elevation screw and check under it for set screw?

Thanks Muss! Anyone know what this type of sight is called? I've heard people refer to dog-ear or wing???

In case anyone is interested...
I carefully pressed in on the two plungers towards the front of the sight and REALLY carefully removed the sight part from the base (3 spring loaded bits).
Here is what it looked like underneath. Has an offset Torx fitting I could unscrew.

Remove the set screw, it is probably a regular Allen head socket. Turn the slide on it's right side, and put a few drops of Kroil on the left side of the sight base so that it can creep under the body. After a good overnight soak use a non-marring hammer or piece of hardwood to protect the sight body and start tapping from left to right. It should come right out of the dovetail. There may be a small metal plate covering small plungers and springs that will lift out that will be visible once you remove the sight body. On the 3rd gen guns those are for the mag safety and I forget what else.

For what it's worth, Roy Jinks told me one time all S&W dovetails were straight across. (Install or remove from either side).

Yes the dovetails are but the reason you install from the right to left is because of the sight, not the dovetail, at least as far as the front's are concerned. I always wondered too until I bought a replacement to play with.
The beveled corners facilitate entry into the dovetail. Don't try it the other way or you'll booger things up.
