So I bought a S&W 317 2". I bought it so I could get more familiar with my 442's controls and mechanisms for less. I bought brand new in box from the local police athletic pro shop. Right out of the box, fun to shoot, until...4th shot. The action started to jam up, the cylinder locked up. I could force the hammer to lock back for SA but sometimes the hammer would fall back down immediately.
Almost a grinding sensation was going on when I continued to shoot the cylinder a couple more rounds. After that I ejected the cylinder (b/c the gun now refused to shoot. I tried to eject the rounds, and they were solidly and stiffly in the cylinder. I was able to push a little harder and they came out. but it was like the rounds had...expanded and didn't want to come out. So I reloaded the gun, and the first couple shots were just hunky dory, then it started to lock up again more and more every shot. I figured out after doing this a few times (I'm a slow learner) that the spent rounds were backing out of the cylinder and were not seated on the cylinder face flat. Now I don't know much about revolvers but this isn't supposed to happen right?
I called S&W CS and got a rude CS agent who was telling me that the manual outlines that certain ammo this will happen. My manual says nothing like that. The only mention in the manual about ammo and the 22 is that it is ammo specific in terms of ignition. The CS guy totally didn't listen to anything I had to say and brushed me off saying I needed to call back tomorrow when a tech was in. (why is CS hours 8am - 8pm if they don't have a tech rep around???)
Overall I'm fairly pissed as the service I got from Sig Sauer was top notch and incredibly fast on 2 minor repairs I needed to get done. Where S&W CS kept me on the phone for 30 minutes on hold, (after I was hung up on once, lost in the perpetual "transferring system" between "agent" and "voicemail", and treated like an idiot. I'm a new revolver shooter who bought a $550 .22lr revolver. If I wanted this kind of treatment I should have bought a Taurus for half the price right?

I tried both remington golden bullets and CCI Mini Mags with sad results.

Iunno, maybe I'm just having a bad day and wanted to vent. Is there something actually wrong with the revolver or should I go try some other types of ammo? Did I miss something on the cleaning (I did a light wipe of lube on the cylinder faces and behind the star.) Its a new gun so I thought it didn't need a lot of breaking in.

Hyper-velocity ammo like mini-mags are not recommended.

Use the "find" feature and use the word "extraction" (and any other you might think of) and you will find some info that might help. Good luck.

Give the cylinder charge holes a serious cleaning with a bronze brush. If that doesn't solve the problem send it back.

I had a very early 317 2". It had terrible extraction problems from the first cylinder full. Further checking found that the endshake was so bad the cylinder face scraped the forcing cone. This was a brand new gun, so I sent it back. S&W fixed both problems.

CCI Mini Mags are high velocity ammo, not hyper velocity. They shouldn't cause a problem.

Hey thanks Jerry,

I'll give the cylinder a good cleaning. Its been 3 whole days (4 actually, but 3 complete days) since I called, left a message, and emailed S&W customer service. No response at all yet.

They get a big fat 0 in terms of customer service so far.

I have yet to shoot my new no-lock 442. but I am already skeptical. and I have a M&P 9mm ordered and pre-paid for. I hope I have better luck with them and not get the rare lemon out of them too.

I just wanted to give people an update. Got the 317 back from S&W a while ago Iunno what they did but it didn't fix it. 2 week vacation from S&W was unfruitful. Sent it back a second time, returned 2 weeks later with a big sloppy mess of carbon all over the barrel and cylinder and scratches all over the frame and crane to my new 317. Have yet to test it again, but will try to this weekend.

Angry 317-2 malfunctions

I'd like to hear more about the resolution of the 317-2 and its jammed cylinder and failure to cycle. I also bought a new one last week and have the same problem. I wish I hadn't bought the damn thing. An informal survey of the members of my shooting club seems to indicate a loss in faith in S&W quality control and customer service. This can hurt, and S&W should get on this as soon as possible. I haven't contacted them yet because I am so ticked off at this ****** revolver I need to cool off first. (Trust me. My conversation with them would not go well.)

Default 317 .22 Jamming Problems

Branta, Crosse : did either of you get your issues resolved? I recently purchased a 317, had jamming problems, had the cylinder replaced, still jammed, got a replacement 317, same thing happened. Going to call S&W again about the second gun's problem, but just wondered what you all had experienced in the end.

I have a nine shot HI Standard .22 and if I shoot mini mags out of it, I literally have to hammer the spent brass out.
