I took my new 686-6 ssr to the range today and I had a bit of a problem. About 150 rounds into my practice (mostly .38 special) the cylinder got stuck in the closed position. I tried to open it with a reasonable, but not excessive amount of force but it still wouldn't open. Originally I thought it was stuck at the extractor. Eventually I figured out it was stuck at the locking bolt and extractor rod. I took a pin and pushed in the locking bolt and the cylinder opened with no problem. Now every time I close it, I need to use a pin to push open the locking bolt. Is this normal (I assume not)? Is the locking bolt something that should be lubricated regularly? Even with a new gun (less that 200 rounds)?

Also, now when I open the cylinder and give it a spin the extractor rod wobbles very slightly. Is this, or will this become a problem? If so, should it be covered by warranty?

Thanks.

H.

To check for bent rod, remove rod & lay on a flat surface like glass or mirror and it will show right away. All rods have a little movement and may not be bent. As for the locking problem, if the rod is tight (turn counterclockwise), then the rod may be slightly too long. Take a SMALL amount off the end of the rod until it opens and closes like it should. You don't need much, go easy. Excess end play will also allow the cylinder to move fwd and cause locking problems.

Send it back to S&W and let them worry about fixing it. They have the knowledge to diagnose the problem and the parts to fix it.
