I've seen 617's setup for 22 mag. Not shot, seen. I don't know if the chambers were reamed or the cylinder swapped out. I'm not convinced the barrel dia. is a big issue, if an issue at all.

Can't say for sure. I have an extra cylinder I've been temped to ream the chambers for 22 mag. We used to shoot .358 jacketed rifle bullets out of .357 mags with no ill effects.

Anybody here done this? The 617 22 mag?

I have a 4 in. no dash 617 that i fitted with a 48 cylinder as far as saftey and reliability everything functions well over 200 rds of mag ammo. Accuracy seems to be the biggest problem.I have never been able to equil the results using 22LR ammo. But I have not tried some of the newer "premium" ammo available. Posible that the tighter BBL of the 617 could be causing problems. Something else i want to try is 22 WRF ammo. a little slower but maybe the lead bullet might fly better? or lead the hell out of it! good luck

Years ago, when I had a Ruger Single Six in .22 LR and my shooting buddy had a Ruger SS .22 LR/.22 WRFM, we experimented with swapping cylinders and shooting .22 Magnum in both guns. By a lucky coincidence, the cylinder was a proper fit in both frames. The normally excellent accuracy from my SS became mediocre when firing .22 Magnums. This was over several sessions and a couple hundred rounds fired. Groups went from 1" at 25 yards to 3"-4" in my SS. The only difference we could tell were the barrels. Both guns shot about 1 1/2" groups using .22 LR at 25 yards.

I wonder if the barrels have a different rate of twist?

As I remember, and this was years ago that I saw it in writing, Winchester adopted the old .22 WRF rifling twist rate and bore dimensions for it's new .22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum. .22 WRF can be fired safely and accurately in .22 Magnum guns.

I once read an article where the .22 and .22.22 Magnum guns were fired extensively for accuracy tests, and the conclusion was that the convertible guns used the larger bore and groove dimension both to avoid chamber pressure problems and to give acceptable accuracy.

I've encountered several .22 LR rifles converted to .22 Magnum, some rather crudely (with homemade twist drill reamers) that gave lousy accuracy with both .22 LR and .22 Magnum ammunition because of the the bad chambers and rifling dimensions. I've also experimented with chamber adapters that allowed firing .22 Magnum in .222 Rmington, .223 Remington, and .22-250 chambers and all gave acceptable, if not stellar accuracy since the standard barrel groove diameters for them was .224".
