Default Anyone else shoot service revolver class?

I am for the first time going to be competing in the NY Police & Fire Games (formerly known as the LE Olympics) and I was wondering if anyone else had ever competed in what they call the service revolver class. This is a match / series of matches where the gun used has to be a revolver with a 4-inch barrel and capable of firing .38 Specials with the only load being a 158 grain bullet, which can be a HP, SWC, or round nose, but no full wadcutters. The matches are at 7 yards, 10, and 25 using a standard B-27 target. Anyone else compete in something similar and can tell me what kind of loads they prefer. I myself am using a M & P thin barrel (easier for me to see the sight and aim at 25 yards than say a Model 10 heavy barrel). Right now I am going to be trying some 158 grain SWC's with 4.0 grains of Win 231 for a fairly mild load.

I used to shoot Service Revolver in PPC matches.

I would assume that there will be some reloading durring the stages, and there well be a time limit as well.

I would recommend you use round nosed bullets as they speed load faster.

Also check the rules to be3 sure you can use reloads.

In the PPC Service Revolver matches you HAD to use factory ammo.

Yeah the NY police games allows for the use of reloads but I was surprised myself that they do to be honest. I would have thought for the liability issues (this is NY after all) that factory only, but I am wondering if it has to do with ammo shortage issues. I have not seen a box of 158 grain .38 ammo on a store shelf here in many months.

Is there a power floor, a la IDPA/IPSC? If not, my pet load is 3.5-3.7gr of Trail Boss behind a 158gr cast, either LRN or SWC. Creampuff load and very accurate. Shoots perfectly from my Mod. 67 and very well from my 28-2. No chrono, so don't have velocity, but "the book" (Hodgdon's manual) shows a max load of 4.2 at a hair over 800fps.

I expect I may try my hand shooting ESR/SSR in IDPA this summer.

THERE IS NO POWER FACTOR , RELOADS ARE ALLOWED IN ALL PPC MATCHES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DISTINGUISHED MATCHES. A GREAT 158 GR LOAD IS 3.1GR WST. USE A REDDING PROFILE CRIMP DIE. JIM P

Does anyone have a link to rules for this style of shooting and/or course of fire, or place to send for them. I have always had an interest in this type of shooting but never really followed through with it. Dave, when and where are the LE/FD Games this year?
Thanks in advance - Joe

Unfortunately the NRA does not have the rule book available on-line, all they currentlt have are the recent rule changes.

The course of fire typically is:

Stage 1 - 6 rounds in 8 seconds, one hand only from the 3 yard line.

Stage 2 - 12 rounds in 20 seconds (including reload) at the 7 yard line.

Change targets

Stage 3 - 12 rounds in 20 second (inclding reload) at the 15 yard line.

Stage 4 - 18 rounds in 90 seconds (6 kneeling, 6 standing left hand baracade [shooting left handed] and 6 rounds right side baracade [shooting right handed]) Baracade must be used for cover and support in the kneeling position.

I did some searches last night and found this link to the site for the LE/FD Olympics games this year. There is a scheduke of the events and the course of fire for each event. I got looking at the winners from last year and actually found someone I know from a local department that won a few of the revolver events. I am going to reach out to him for additional info. Joe

One thing I miss about police work is the Police Olympics. It wasn't quire fair though, I ran the rifle portion of the course, I used the 100 yard reduced NRA High Power Course. I finely quit shooting the rifle portion as it wasnt fair since I was the only one who was into High Power shooting, it was still fun though.

I always loved the PPC with service revolvers, didnt win any, but it was fun. I still shoot it for practice though there are no matches around here.

I did too. We had coppers and deputies and troopers and forest rangers and probation officers and dispatchers. Just about anybody involved in any kind of police work. Some guys were absolutely horrible shots. But it didn't matter. We had a blast killin' paper and had a big BBQ afterwords. Nothing like a competition, just a bunch of guys (and gals) playin their hobby. High scorers would win some kind of prize like a scanner or pair of binoculars or something. Lowest scorer would win some kind of prize like a box of ammo. Everybody got a gift card for one of the local sporting goods stores. At one match the guy that weighed the most got a Thighmaster exercise thingie.

We had a little "action" at one match when one of the wives stumbled upon a homeless guy sleeping in the lady's room at the range. It turned out to be the harmless town drunk that we all knew on a first name basis. We made him clean the bathrooms and then gave him lunch.

This is a great match and a lot of fun the only issue I have is its over so quickly.
Since we started shooting it at my club I have said it’s a good easy match and the possible should be shot. I cannot get over the fact I have not cleaned the match a single time, been very close but never got there.

The match you mention is called the 48shot match.
The course of fire and rules for the matches can be found at wa1500.org
