Wow scaramanga! Great looking revolver. Without the barrel flutes it would have been just another PPC gun. With the flutes it closes in on fine art. Bet it shoots as good as it looks.

I just got this gun back yesterday from Clark Custom. It was built on a Model 10-8. It has a Tri-set rear adjustable Aristo-Crat Rib.

Picked up the this PPC Revolver last weekend at the gunshow, a 14-3 DA only K38, target hammer, smooth trigger with stop screw, bomar rib, apex barrel, has a double action as smooth as slick silk, has excellent lock up, crown and bore. Note how its S&W targets grips are shaved on the left side for better speed loading.

Seller was glad to get rid of this ugly duckling (his words) for $275. Did not try to educate him. Just paid him and said thank you sir.

Shot my first 3" 6 round double action group at 50 yards today offhand with it.


picked up a nice S&W 10-5 on another table 10 minutes later for $125, was a good smith day.

Just got this Model 14 "no dash" from Express Police Supply. They took several 14's and a 36 in trade from the Kirkwood, MO Police Dept. They were selling the 14's for $350 and when I called to get descriptions of what they had the young fella I spoke to tried to describe the Bomar rib and I knew exactly what he had. He sent me some pics and as soon as I opened them I called him back and bought the gun. I've never shot PPC but I thought it would be cool to have a vintage competition gun to play with.

The gun turned out to be in much better shape than I had anticipated, I'd say close to 95%. It was clearly well taken care and not abused. In addition to the Bomar sight rib, the hammer has been bobbed and polished, the formerly serrated trigger has been smoothed and rounded and a trigger stop made of silicone built up on the back of it. The serial number dates the gun to 1960 and all of the serialized parts match. The grips are stamped 4/1982 and are quite worn, in fact, the S&W emblem on the right grip panel is worn almost smooth. It's definitely seen plenty of use but it sure doesn't look like it except for the ejector rod, which has had most all of the finish worn off of it. The action is butter smooth and very light, enough so that I had a couple of light strikes when I test fired it wth Speer 130gr FMJ.

Anyway, I think it's a pretty cool old piece. I'm going to give Kirkwood PD a call and see if someone there can fill me in on some of the gun's history.

That is one cool looking unit. I would have loved to have shown up to a match with that pistol, back in the day. Would have won the match is only because all the other shooters were drooling to much to shoot straight. Still have the gun I had built in the late 70s and it still shoots better than I was ever able to shoot it.

About 20 years ago I was shooting in a local indoor PPC league and a few local matches in southeast Michigan. At the time, the gun to have around this region was a Mojo PPC gun built by Joe Leinenger of Mojo Custom Guns. I couldn't afford one back then and as life changed I dropped out of shooting until recently. After all this time, the league is still running, so when I got back into shooting this year, I joined up. Joe is still gunsmithing, mainly for cowboy action shooting, but is building PPC guns to order again too.
After 20 years things finally came together and I picked up my Mojo PPC gun yesterday. This morning I shot it in the league and on the very first target I shot a 295 out of 300. I haven't shot a score like that in 20 years!
I shoot better with a gun than a camera, so these aren't as pretty as some of the photos in this thread, but here's my gun:

It started out as a Model 64-1. It looked like a police trade in that was carried a lot and shot very little. It locked up pretty well before Joe worked on it. Now it's the smoothest cleanest action I've tried and is timed perfectly. I'm a southpaw and sometimes S&W revolvers time fine when the trigger is pulled with a right hand, but not so well with a left. Joe took that into account when he set it up.

Update 12/31/10: Just got back from Joe's, where he did some tweaks to make the gun even better. Just little details, tailored to the way I shoot, to make it even better. He notices things I wouldn't have even detected, but once done make a real difference. I guess that's what sets a pro gunsmith apart from the amateurs. I got to check out some other guns he'd just worked on for other shooters and they were equally nice.

I would love to see the hammer if you happen to have it removed from the gun some time. I have removed the hammer spur on my S&W 625, but skeletonizing it would add a whole other dimension of coolness.

hi guys. i was looking to build a ppc, but no one seems to sell underlugs for them anymore! Aristocrat makes one but i think it's ugly. Clark Customs does not make them anymore and neither does Power Customs. i just called both. does anyone know where i can get one made?

There are alternativ ways of building a ppc1500 revolver!
Use the SCORE barrel weight / laufgewicht for 686 629 revolver
Most people change the barrel to get more weight but with our
barrel weight there´s no need of it! about 170 dollar plus shipping from sweden. 4 special screws with brass nose make´s it easy to mount without damage or need to drill in the revolver. Extrem quality stainless steel 2333 and in polished or satin version with laser engravered pattern

The aristocrat underlug does work well, and you could have it drilled to make it more interesting to look at. Mine has a locking system built into it by the maker of my gun (Cheshire and Perez) C&P is long gone I'm afraid.

The different barrel shape shaves a little weight off compared to my other one, but it still feels good in the hand and is as smooth and accurate as I could ask for. I don't know what his magic is with his action jobs, but I've yet to feel any nicer.

Edit: After reading what I wrote I think I should clarify. I don't own this one yet. I'm still working on that.

He's updated his web site some to showcase the Cowboy Action Shooting work he does, but he's still making outstanding PPC guns and doing custom work on 1911's, M&P's, Glocks, etc.

The Brush Creek Ltd/Mojo Custom Guns

I just purchased this one on Gunbroker. Can't wait to take it to the range. Came with a Bill Davis soft case. Crane is stamped C20 by the smith who worked on it. 10-5 in nickel. Has trigger stop, and I just ordered a pair of original Davis grips for it. Just found out from Bill Davis some facts about this pistol.

The gunsmith who machined the barrel and weight would have been charlie young and Bill Davis did the action and fine tuning. It has an apex barrel, 1 in 14" twist, .356 grove diameter , broached , not button rifled. 4140 chrome-moly Steel. The nickel finish done by Alta Plating in Sacramento. This was called the Grade III. Circa 1977. Sold for approx $595 when new.

Well Frank , finally getting some photos of mine in here. Bottom is a gun made for my wife ,(she shot master class)after Davis company closed, gun made by Craig Marivio,not sure of spelling.
He also built the second gun when he worked at Davis,small CM on yoke inside,gun is 20yrs old this season,easily 500,000 rounds through it 35-40 thousand a year was average in the 90's. STILL holds X ring at 50 yrds, though I find it seldom these days.
3rd gun is an Alan Tanaka, had built 9-10 years ago,shoots great,only put about 500 rds through it . Just cant get away from my old Davis gun. Gotta get lifting to keep it up in match 4.REB

Those of you that have PPC revolvers built by Brush Creek (Mojo guns) how do you like them? I am wanting to have a new revolver built sometime next year. I am shooting an old Royce Weddle model 14 he built back in 79'. Its a good gun, but timing it getting bad and I'm tired of having to get a gunsmith after every match. I am wanting to have one built on a model 64. Thanks for any info you provide.

Not really a true PPC gun, but more of an in the PPC style gun.



Base gun is an original model Colt Trooper, customized by Tom Volquartsen back in the mid 1980's, when he was still doing general gunsmithing. The V spring gun's carbon frame is blued and the stainless 5" Douglas barrel is blued. Yes, stainless can be blued after an acid bath (pickeling).

The gun is very accurate, but I've never been able to shoot the Python style V spring action well in double action, so it doesn't get shot much any more.

If I had to do it all over, I would have followed Tom's suggestion and slab sided the barrel. I don't know what the gun weighs, but it's heavy and the balance isn't great. IIRC... skipping the slab sides was a matter of not having the extra $50 at the time.

I have not had Joe build me a complete gun but the action work he has done on three revolvers is superb. As was stated in another thread he has his own machine shop and can do almost any barrel contours and his build times sould be short.

Here are my PPC guns. The 6" is Schneider custom built in Piqua Ohio with a 1-14" twist Douglas bbl. Its built on a 15-2 frame. Lots of wear but priced reasonable. The 4 1/2" I just had built on an M&P frame made abt 1908. The original bbl was cut so I had the PPC bbl cut to look different and the rib cut to match. Ball detent lock and a bead blast re-blue. Has the pre-war long action and is to be used in the clubs double action only shoot each year. Both are very accurate. Larry

A S&W 686 with match barrel.

This is my Ron Powers Custom. Model 13 with 6" Douglas, Bomar Rib, DAO hammer (smooth as butter action), trigger stop set, and originally had Hogue grips which he modified to allow adjustment of the set screw retaining the stress screw. Thus allowing adjusting for hard primers. Ron requested only .38spl be shot in the firearm. Way beyond accurate. Used it in Police PPC completion and Missouri Police Olympics. Still have the open front holster (Safariland I believe) somewhere. This was made when he had his shop in his basement in Independence, MO.

Lifetime guarantee Ron stated UNLESS I ever took off the sideplate! Ron was a giant of a man but extremely nice.

Some one had a 6" .32 PPC bbl for sale and it got the gears going. Since I have 2 other 32 longs, a 32 PPC would be neat with a 5" bbl and adjustable sights with no rib on top. I have a worn K-22 that would be perfect, HHHMMMM? I liked this thread. Larry

I have to admit that I don't know. The PPC guns belong to my father, who shot for a California department in the '70s. I always thought the short barrel model was just his perverse sense of humor (he also has a 4" model that he actually carried on duty - see below), but I've read that there were "backup gun" matches. Perhaps it was for one of those.

As far as I know, it was built by Bill Davis.

I don't know much about this 15-3. It has a ball lock/detent in the crane and weighs 56 oz. The rib seems to be just a normal scope mount that was designed for S&W's because it has a screw hole that matches up to the rear sight screw. It is attached to the barrel with 3 screws. Its SAO and the trigger breaks at 1.5 lbs. It is very accurate. The grip really helps with the heavy front end. It's not quite at the level of sophistication of the guns pictured earlier in the thread. I added the trigger stop . Pencil eraser, Duco cement, adjusted with emery board.

This thread has brought back a TON of memories - all good, too!! If I were shooting PPC today, I believe I would be competitive with my nearly stock 6" 686-4 (all else being equal), or at least my GUN would be competitive. Back in the day, a few of the more affluent shooters did quite well with a stock Python. Some had a Smithon built (a Smith revolver with a Python barrel). I'm a bit surprised I didn't see one in this thread. At any rate, the full underlugged barrel of a stock 686 gives the extra barrel weight desired for better holding and recoil recovery (even with the light wadcutter loads used, less recoil is always better)...

Oh well, speculation as those days are pretty much gone, anyway...

A real economy-grade PPC gun made from a Model 14 with a Bomar Rib and sights, Mustang Grips, action job, target hammer, trigger shoe and my .38 wadcutter handloads. That was about all this former Louisiana deputy sheriff could afford back in the day.

Notice that most all the S&W PPC revolvers are sporting non-factory barrels. Custom heavy barrel with a 1 in 12 or 1 in 14 twist.

The reason is that the factory Model 14 barrel is not very accurate out to fifty yards. They were 1 in 18 3/4 and would cause the bullet to yaw at 50 yards. Some worse than others. I have seen some that would strike the B-27 target almost sideways.

Other than the grips, it's a stock Model 19-4. Well, I did paint the front sight orange in order to be more visible when held on the silhouette targets.

There is a guy who shoots a 1911 who, for a 48-shot match, will put maybe five or six shots into the nine ring. All the rest are 10s or Xs.

So far, I can't beat him.

But I can beat everyone else. At least some of the time.
