I was up in Brisbane a few days ago visiting when I saw this the Gunsmith had just finished. I might get him to build me one I think. It's a 686 with all the goodies and a superb DA trigger.

Go for it! I wished I'd gotten a PPC Revolver sooner! My Clark PPC revolver is A LOT more fun to shoot than I expected. I've had mine for about six weeks and I've put over 1600 rounds through it already - I'm addicted!



Bullet: Remington 148 gr. HBWC
Powder: Alliant Bullseye 2.8 grs.
Primer: Federal 100 Small Pistol Match
Case: Remington Wadcutter
LOAL: 1.185
Comments: Cases resized using Lee Factory Crimp Die with seating stem removed and taper-crimped.

Oh hey a thread after my own heart since I've been accumulating slab barrel PPC style guns for a year or two. This seems like a fitting way to kick off my account here.

First up is what initially looks like a 586, however it is actually a factory SAO 14-3 with 586 barrel and recessed model 19 cylinder. It was refinished by S&W and is wearing a set of Cloyce grips. It normally has a different set of more target-style Cloyces but this was a better quality picture.




Next up is a 586 with a Clark setup custom built by a gunsmith at New Braunfels Gun Works as his custom PPC gun. It has Nill grips.




Moving on here's a 27-2 of unknown origin with Fitz grips.




Finally here's the centerpiece of my collection and most recent purchase, a 629 that's been engraved, fully worked over, and converted to .45lc. The grips are generic Thai ebay grips which are fine until I find something that fits this perfectly.

Now there's a few similar ones on GB from the same seller in what appears to be an estate liquidation which give clues to the work that's been done but I don't currently have any proof. The non-slab twin to this was engraved by Jere Richardson but mine isn't marked by the engraver that I can see. There's another that has similar action work done but was Behlert modified but I can't find any proof that mine even went there either. If anyone has some ideas on how to trace down who did what then feel free to chime in.

Had to complete the build on this by sending to Clark, they did a fantastic job. Then had it Cerakoted which I don't know if I like it or not. Still like the old bluing look and the gun didn't really have a good finish when I bought it. Shoots great. Aristocrat rib.

I entered my first NPSC last year and had a great time! Revolver-wise I was shooting a couple borrowed 686's, a 4" and a 6". I was fortunate enough to earn some Distinguished Revolver points and even won a firearm award for a first timer! Needless to say my search was on for a 1500 gun and I was able to buy this from a nice gentleman this winter.



I even exchanged some emails with Mr. Davis which was awesome in itself. Its a Grade IV built on a Model 67, which apparently was spec'd out by the Secret Service Team back in the day. About 3-400 were built off this spec according to Mr. Davis. This is an excellent piece, very little signs of wear. My only plan is to replace these grips with some Davis, which are on the way. I shoots GREAT! Can't wait to take it to Raton in July and back to Albuquerque in Sept.

i'd search and try to find a set of Bill Rogers combat grips for your PPC

best i found, and tried them all back in the day (mid 70's to early 80's),looking for that extra advantage

I just found a pair of Roger's plastic grips on eBay for $15 shipped...

A six inch magnum in .357 or .44 would make a great ground blind or tree stand gun or at least thats what Ive always thought. Anyone here use one for hunting? I know we have a member who rescued a 4 incher for house duty for his misses.
PS I love the classic Rogers/Safariland grips.

BEAUTIFUL STUFF!!! I didn't see one of these though. A J- Frame PPC gun. A model 34 built by TL Almond 30 years ago. Honest to Goodness, it shoots as good as anybody can hold.

I've wanted a PPC gun since I saw my training sergeant carry one at the Sheriffs Office (circa 1977). What I found is an "S" code m&p with a milled bull barrel and a Bo-Mar ramp. Still tight with a crisp light double action. I put some new Davis grips on it.

Just installed the underlug and grips on this 586-0

The local matches I shoot, in an effort to draw new shooters intimidated by the 50 yard stage, are now shooting a 48 round course that maxes at 25 yards ( no law enforcement agency I know still shoots out to fifty in qualifications !)
The revolver class is open to service guns max 4" barrel and since all mine are six inch except one, I have been using a stock model 15 with 2" barrel. The postings about these shooting like four inch guns are true with my scores running around a 470/480 on a good day, with every shot out of the ten ring my fault not the guns! I know I would fall apart at fifty yards with such a gun, but I enjoy being able to finish in the top five shooters consistently at the matches with my shaggy beat up 15.

Just picked up this PPC S&W 686 no dash. I have no idea who build it but it truly is fun! Any insight would be great!

A 686 converted to shoot PPC matches would certainly have been intended to shoot light .38 loads, but the frame and cylinder were definitely spec'd for .357 Magnum.

What happened, exactly? And what was the source of the ammo? And did you notice anything abnormal in your last shot BEFORE the shot that did that damage?

This guy had "BOOZER" carved into the grips that came with it.

It was shooting 38's great and on my first 357 round I heard a almost glass breaking sound when I shot. Immediately opened the cylinder to find the entrance of the barrel mushrooms and cracked. I hope enable to have somebody fix this somehow, someway.

I have a great local shop! It was a sad day to see the 686 break but my local shop refunded my money, great service and a long time customer made here!

Love the ramp with the extended sight radius!

It's the only short barreled PPC gun I've seen around and it's a damned laser. Trigger is great of course, but I still can't figure out why someone built a short barreled PPC gun. Oh well, worth the $205 I spent on it and then some.

I have to actually measure it sometime, but around 3" I think.

I use to shoot PPC back in the 80's and 90's.

I used these..........

686 (no dash) with adjustable factory frt sight and modified trigger for PPC




Bill Davis built 581 w/Aristocrat rib, etc....




I also used a 686 w/ 2.5" bbl for off duty matches. The trigger was modified. It looked liked any other 686 2.5".

BTW....I refuse to send my PPC revolvers back to S&W for the M modification. I don't want anyone to mess around with my triggers.

My experience is that S&W won't mess with your trigger/action work. It's Ruger that will put it back to stock even if doing unrelated work.

Officially, I believe that the NRA still restricts PPC to LEO's; however, some clubs do invite civilians to participate. Many years before my accident, I participated in PPC matches at the Lebanon County Police Combat Pistol Club in Lebanon Pennsylvania. Using the NRA classification system, Ishot a 98% average, which I believe was a master classification. I used an unaltered 4 screw 6" K38 with a Hogue Monogrip. That is my night stand revolver.

Currently NRA Action pistol has a match called Civilian 1500 which is the same as the LEO ppc course.

Just Because! My favorite thing to do is shoot steel plates at 25 yards. Have always thought that PPC guns looked cool. Won this last night on G.B. I do not know who builder is. It is the only 1 I have seen with 8.75" barrel. I will post real pictures after I receive it.

Any thoughts or ideas of maker (gunsmith)? Frame is 10-6. Bob

The resolution of your pic is a little low, but it appears to say Cheshire & Perez on the left side of the barrel. If this is correct it was built by that company, probably prior to 1980. I believe Bill Davis took over the company and renamed it The Davis Company sometime around then. Around 1980 there was a rule change that made barrels longer than 6" illegal, which is why you don't see a lot of them.

LOL! Here's mine again, nothing new - just put some Bill Davis grips on it (Nice!). I found out it's pretty accurate with 158 gr. RNL bullets too! It's sighted in for 148 gr. HBWCs but I might just switch...

After wanting a PPC gun for years I finally took the plunge It is a S&W 66-3 with a Wichita sight , don't know who did the work on this gun but I am very pleased. Here is a couple pics from the sight that I got it from

For those that might not know Bill Davis passed away in april.What a great guy, let alone what he did for PPC shooting.
From what I understand he had gotten his grip patent or whatever back from safariland, I bought a bunch of grips from him last year. I heard someone was contacting his wife to see about purchasing the rights/molds whatever from her to make his grips. Nothing for sure yet.
What I like about his grips is they are easily modified to the individuals taste, just grind away, and shape as you want. Thats all.
