Default anybody shoot a S&W gen 3 in comp?

Hello,
Anyone shoot a gen 3 like a 4576 in competition? The 4576 is single
stack 8 plus 1. I want a single stack as I would like to carry the gun also. The double stack is just to big for me.

You can shoot pretty much anything you like in competition, it's just a matter of how competitive you want to be. IDPA is more in line with production guns, USPSA has production class, Bullseye probably requires a more dedicated firearm but that doesn't keep you from using it.

I have used my 5903/6 and 4006 3rd gen guns in both IDPA and USPSA and did very well with them in addition to just being fun to shoot guns.

I shoot my 5906 in USPSA and IDPA. I never tried my 4506, I don't know what class I would use it in for USPSA. {production?} IDPA, CDP I guess.
I do very well BTW with the 5906. It's all fun to me.

Not yet, but I am going to be shooting some IDPA matches this year and plan on using a 5906.

Default 1006 in IPSC

I'm using a 1006 in the production group in my local PPC group. Enjoy the heck out of it and I don't worry too much about being 'competitive', just shooting against myself.

I use my 4506-1 and I love it. I put the XS Big Dot sights on it and they work well for running & gunning. Only tging that is an issue is when the RSO tells me to drop the mag, clear, and dry fire the pistol but it has that mag disconnect feature so they usually have me insert an empty mag to drop the hammer. Also not too much I have seen by way of a "competition" holster for a full size, singe stack 45.

I have used my 3904 a few times when we shoot the NRA Action Pistol courses like the Los Alamitos Pistol Course that don't go any further out than 25 yards. It's a lot of fun to shoot. I use a homecast 140 (142 actually) grain Saeco Semi-wadcutter bullet at 1,020 fps. It's the most accurate load I've been able to make for this pistol and it feeds 100 percent reliably. We are not allowed to have hollow-points here (and there are often roadside revisions so there's no point in playing around with that law) so this doubles as my actual "in use" load for that gun or my Glock.

As the gun will stay inside around 3.5 inches at 25 -- no tack-driver but it'll do -- it's good enough for the 25 yard courses with the NRA Target's 8-inch X-ring. But for anything we shoot that goes out beyond 25, I have other guns to use that will do the job much better. I love the gun, though, and it's so cool to have one down here.

I have not, but an FBI agent who used to shoot in matches with us often used his 1076 and he really was a good shot. He always finished near the top. If he did not use the 1076, he would use his NIS 4 inch round butt Model 19, which he still kept with him even after he got his 1076.

There was a deputy from the county to my immediate north who used his 4506, in a Safety Speed clam shell holster, of all things. His relatively poor showing was neither the fault of the pistol or the holster.

This is the only photo I have of my 3904 actually in use and it can't count as a real competition. It's just my wife using the 3904 shooting against our daughter using the Glock in a "draw, shoot six, reload and shoot six in 18 seconds" little course at 10 yards while our son -- in the sombrero with the K-38 -- looks on. But the 3904 doesn't just sit in the gun-clock, it gets out onto the range quite often.

In the mid-90s I shot my PC SD-9 in our club's local USPSA style matches.....

LOL there were a group (4-6) of us that would shoot the courses more like what would become IDPA....IWB holsters, carry guns, cover garments.........we left the "run and gun" to the race gun crowd.

We'd shoot a lot of A's but our times sucked for USPSA.....

The all steel SD-9 in 9mm was/is like shooting a .22...... a 6906 steel frame mated to a 4.25" slide and barrel w/ the PC barrel bushing.

I stopped using it when I found out there were less than 200 SD-9s made.

I still use my 5906 PPC9 (6") in our national Police and services match. It's kinda like your PPC match. It's still plenty good enough to win.

The 39 and its descendants would be perfect for the new Compact Carry Pistol division of IDPA: 4.1" barrel, 37oz max, 8+1 capacity, minor pf.

Default 3rd gen in competition

I was a SWAT operator for years and I competed individually with a 5904 which was our issue weapon for several years, my team also competed with the 5904's when we went to SWAT competitions, we normally shot a PPC style course from 3 to 45 yds. Then an "assault" course which was a shoot and move course. We also had competitions using shooting houses, making entries, clearing rooms with single, multiple threat tgts and no shoot/shoot targets.....scored by time and COM or head shots. We had the 5904's for several years and had logged thousands of rounds through them when they were replaced. We got a lot of trigger time on the guns and they were good, solid pistols. I had guy's on the team who could break an anvil with a rubber hammer, so the 5904 had to be solid to go the distance.

Shot a 5903 in SSP once and did well. Hit all the steel, good quick hits.
Pleasantly surprised by its performance. Even the DA first shot was never a problem.
