Default IDPA in Mexico

For the past 4 years we have been practicing IDPA and holding matches in México (central zone).

The most popular gun, for IDPA, here in Mexico is the Glock 25, in 380 ACP.

Nevertheless I alway participate with my S&W revolvers.

In the beginning I use my model 67, now I'm using my "Mexican Outdoorsman" whit a 4" barrel.

We managed to make our matches family oriented, so youngster can participate. My son uses a Custom Commander in 380 ACP (can't take it away from him).

Heres a Pic of my "Mexican Outdoorsman" along the Custom Commander in 380 acp.

The S&W is finished in QPQ (Something similar to the tennifer finish on the Glock pistols). The pics show the gun with the original sight, but now I put a SDM fiber optic on it (my eyes really need it).

The Commander has a stainless slide whit a regular frame, now finished in QPQ also (yes I love that finish, its almost indestructible), in the picture it has its original blue finish.

That 4" Ourdoorsman looks like it would be a VERY smooth shooter for .38 SPL SSR division, with the big heavy N-frame. I see fixed sight 4" "Heavy Duties" from time to time here in Kentucky at gun shows, but I don't recall seeing a 4" Outdoorsman with adjustable sights. I shoot K-frames for SSR Division, and a 625 for ESR Division in IDPA.

What division can you shoot .380 ACP in for IDPA? I would not think .380 ACP would be eligible for SSP division.

IDPA knows that in Mexico the "Biggest" auto pistol caliber that we can use is 380, so they gave us permission to use it in our IDPA Matches. The Glocks go in the SSP and the Custom 1911 go in the ESP. 3 or 4 people have custom 1911 in 380 acp; in fact our "national champion" and a very good friend of mine, has 2 or 3 custom 1911 in 380 (he prefers the Govenment Model over the Commander).

I once saw a picture in John Taffin`s Website of a 4 inch legitimate Outdoorsman, which I'm sure that are pretty rare. Mine is a "Mexican Outdoorsman".......N frame whit a barrel that states that it is a 38 special, so that made it legal here.

Sounds like the laws limit your choices on caliber where you live.

Is reloading something you can do in Mexico? You could load that N-frame 38/44 Outdoorsman up with some "nominal" 38 SPL loads that would be comparable with .357 magnum factory loads.

Is 38 Super legal for civilian use in Mexico? For some reason I was under the impression 38 Super was popular in Mexico, because 9mm was not available to civilians.

John:

Every one thinks that the 38 super is legal in Mexico (even a lot of Mexicans who havent read a copy of the law think that). Until 1972 you could legally own ANY HANDGUN you want, from .22 to 45 Long Colt. In 1972, the Idiotic President at the time created the Gun Law that still rules us.

So by the actual law standards the law abiding citizen can own up to 38 special and 380 acp. As you can imagine we are very limited down here.

yes we can legally reload (although the army say its VERBOTTEN, but as long as the law allows it, I really dont care what our GENERALES want to say about it). The problem is getting all the goodies to do so (Primers and Powder), but......the great black market always can provide you whit it.

So yes we reload, I do reload the ammo for my Commander 380 (3.5 gr of bullseye over a 125 grain LRB) and for my beloved S&W revolvers (from light target loads to Keith Loads). I have a Dillon 550B, a Lee Pro 100, Lyman 45 lube and resizer, Lyman Powder measure, Lee perfect powder measure etc...

I was fortunate enough of becoming friend of an old man whose family use to own one of the top notch gunshops in Mexico; just before they were all closed in 1972. So This man Kept a lot of "NEW STUFF" stored in his house. One day he invited me in and told me: "Please, take all this things with you, I know you will make good use of them". So I came back home whit a lot of bullet moulds, Powder Containers, Old winchester primers in wooden boxes (now gone, but they really worked), an old Lyman Press ( Don`t remember the model, but in some place I read it was the Worst model ever produced by Lyman, which really surprises me because Lyman means Quality, or so I think), bullet pullers, reloading Dies, etc. I started my "man Cave", that was 5 years ago, and I'm still learning, from a lot of friends like Calmex about the "art" of revolver and pistol reloading.

I even bought this old man the commander that my son uses ( I kept the original parts in a safe place, including the original barrel in 38 super). I also bought from this friend a Savage 99 takedown model in .250 Savage; let me tell you that I love that rifle.
