DAO!
Will the champion internet snubby shooter for July please pm a real address for your custom printed targets.
Thank you.

Thanks! PM sent!
The next contest sounds fun! I'll have to switch to another load though, I don't want to be burning through my 135 +P unobtanium rounds too quick!

Me too, but at least you'll get some practice so it's all good!

Yeah. Practice does make perfect.
I tried my 649-5 one time at 25 yards. It was my first time shooting it. Five shots SA .357 Magnum 158gr semi jacketed soft points. I got the target 3/5. Those are pretty hot loads though (Federal-rated 1240fps).
So roughly 17 yards will be slightly easier I suppose but DA will be tough.

I'm a little new here, so this is my first shot at this for August.
I used four guns today, all snubbies...but two are rimfire and were shot SA, so they're out.
Just center fire DAO snubbies.
So, I made one effort each gun; an LCR .357 and my trusty 442-2, both using the PMC Starfire 125gr +p ammo...I wanted something that made clean holes and I'm used to defense ammo giving me more consistent accuracy.
I had something nice going with the 442, but #5 blew open the group...then #10 guaranteed a ****** result.
I faired better with the LCR, the slightly better sights helped, esp in a dimly lit indoor range (wades). I consider triggers between the two guns a wash, despite many really liking the LCR's. They're just different.
442
LCR
I'm pissed about my 442 effort, but I set aside the Starfires for this, so with 20 rounds I wasn't going to be able to do more than one try per gun... and I'm keeping the 135gr Gold Dots dots for carry ( the loaded rounds near the target).
The LCR is about typical for me, sometimes I do better...outdoors I can do this at 25yrds on better days.
I love this idea of a snubby match. Tons of people carry these things, but only a few really try to learn them.

I just noticed you had some Speer Gold Dots in 135gr. I just picked up a box of those Saturday for my 649-5. Mine are .357 Magnum "short barrel".
They seem to get good reviews but according to Speer's website they are basically just a hot .38 spc+P round going by ballistics (just under a 1000 fps, from a 2" barrel however). I've not shot any as of yet but plan to at least a cylinders worth.
They certainly are expensive enough, but certainly get positive reviews. I've replaced Hornady CDs in .357 Magnum for them in my 649.

I have yet to try the magnum 135gr load, just the +p .38sp. They chrono mid to high 800s in the 442 and mid 900s in my 2.5" L frame 242. The mag version I've seen right at or just over 1000fps in guns like the LCR.
The only load I've chrono'd in the LCR was hornady Critical defense .357 mags/125gr, it was right at 1200fps five shot avg.
Personally, the +p .38 135gr should be doing what the 'light magnum' version does, if they were loading it decently....but maybe too many would carp about the recoil. I dunno...

I don't think I would have bought them had I read up on them more (at least not in .357 Magnum). I would say they are high quality ammunition but for the money I would rather have something else in a magnum load and will most definitely remember that the next time I'm buying .357 loads.

I really like the idea, they'd make a nice balance of power/ recoil in smaller revolvers in .357, esp the LCR.
So far, I've tried 158gr sjsp, and the Hornady Citical Zombie stuff in 125gr, both of those have some recoil in the LCR....but not as bad as you'd expect in a 17oz gun.

My 649-5 is a little heavier than your LCR so it's not really that bad for recoil. In fact I shot a few Hornady Critical Defense 125gr out of it and they shot really nice.
Out of the Magnum loads I've shot through mine (the Hornady's, Winchester WB 110gr SJHPs and Federal 158gr jacketed soft points) the Federal's are by far the hottest recoiling ones (according to Federal about 1240 fps). They also have the most muzzle blast.
I plan on shooting at least one cylinder full of the Speer's soon so I will post a report.

I don't have an entry yet but I did do some DA shooting today with my 649-5. Shot some Federal 158gr semi jacketed soft points. Shot ten rounds in DA. Done OK. Rain storm hit literally as I shot the last round so the target got drenched along with us. It was nothing to brag about really and only had eight holes actually on the target anyhow.
I had a couple of pretty bad finches right before the trigger broke(those rounds I shot are very hot, left a red place towards the bottom of my thumb after just 20 shots!). Otherwise it looked like about a five inch group. Shot at 21' however. Had it not rained I probably would have tried for 50' and made an entry.

Perhaps a somewhat lighter load would help control the flinch, before it becomes hard set?

Well you are probably right but they are all I really had to shoot that I can replace fairly easy. I didn't have any standard pressure .38s and the only other .357s I have are SD bullets and some 180gr hard cast Vital Shoks.

Lately I have been finding standard pressure 38's, mostly in 158 round nose lead, at both LGS and big box stores. They will do for punching paper, and they are pretty cheap.

I don’t plan on entering any online shooting contest however I thought that some people visiting this thread might be interested in seeing what some very small and very large snubbies can do.
I shot this 7 shot 15 yard group off-hand using a 3” Model 317. Allen-frame was with me at my local range when this took place. The group measures less than ½”.
At the other end of the caliber scale I have a 25 yard 3 shot group fired from my 2 5/8” Model 460 magnum using 454 Casull ammo. The 2 shot group has the rounds touching each other and adding the third shot (under the tape and above the other 2 shots) the 3 shot group is approximately 1 ¼”. Oh yeah, I shot this group at a moving target as you can see in the 2nd YouTube video listed below.

My LGS usually has Federal American Eagle in .357 and .38. The .38s are usually 130 or 158gr lead round nose. I buy them on occasion but they are usually only a couple dollars cheaper than the magnums.
I think the next time I stop in there I will get a box of .38s for my double action shooting. I need to get some anyhow to keep on hand for my wife to practice with her Charter Arms DAO 2" .38.

Standing unsupported @15 yards with the LaserGrip. The vertical spread is 2-1/4." Horizontal was 1-3/8."
I made the targets a little too small for irons.
So far it does best with Hornady 158gr XTP's, but Remington UMC 130gr is all I've got for range use.

That is awesome shooting Rick. I think you might be five feet too short but I also don't think it would have mattered.

Thanks. The range is graduated in five yard, not foot increments.
There's still plenty of room for improvement.

Damn - that's discouraging!
Now I REALLY have to knuckle down!
I tried to shoot today, but the wait time was too long.
Better luck tomorrow, hopefully.

I know the feeling. I tried a total of 15 shots last weekend. First ten I only had 8 on the paper.
I never even took a picture of the target. Decided to stroke my bruised ego with blasting the target 30/30 times with my Ruger Single Ten .22lr with a 5.5" barrel. Man I really showed that target!
I'm looking forward to September's contest.

Rick a is the winner with 2 1/4". Please PM me your real mail address for your prize of 25 Internet snubby match targets.
This month its seven yards, rip em off as fast as you can holding a group.
Two hands, no rest. Off (other) hand for bonus points.
Still goes by group size. 10 shot groups.
I shot the group on the top left handed. Bottom right handed which I am. I think I concentrated on the trigger more left handed.
My FIRST entry. 3 7/8"
David

Cool.
I think next time it should get stretched out to 20-25 yards.

25 yards for October. Resting or off hand? Single action or double?

Why off hand double, of course!
Next month, me thinks. I'm recovering from a month of free range time...

You're making too many rules. If I have my Model 60 I am not likely to ever shoot double-action at 25-yards. That's not being realistic.
I have been following this. It intrigues me and I will give it a try using your original rules but I don't expect to be posting any results.
Holy cow! Some of you folks are pretty fair hands with your little guns.

So shoot Sept. 7 yards. Right hand and left hand.
The rules change every month. The idea is to get to know your gun and have fun.
Enter early. Enter often.

UMMM, I'm confused. Is this one 10 shot group, half with the right hand & half with the left hand? Or two ten shot groups, one with each hand?

I shot 2 groups. One strong hand, one weak hand, 10 shots each. I used a 2 hand hold because I probably would in a SD situation.
I have used up almost the box of 50 380 rounds. I have one more target to shoot probably left handed, maybe with a glove on. Those are SD ammo and beat the **** outa me shooting that gun. My first shot left handed I had my right thumb behind the slide. Ouch! Next shot I locked my thumbs together and pointed them down range.
Next its time to get out the 5 shot S&W revolvers.
For you folks that shoot the match and don't post targets, go ahead and post them please.
Anyone that shoots the match wins. Practice with your snubby. Its always good!

Thanks for clearing that up. I agree, practice is a good thing.

I'll be getting back to these matches this weekend. Work has been in the way for most of the summer and it's time to give it a rest and get out to the range for some much needed stress relief and practice!!
Besides, I'm a firm believer in practicing shooting with both strong and weak hands and always try to end my day at the range with shooting at least one magazine or cylinder with my weak hand so this is going to be right up my alley.

Wow, where have a been? I'm just seeing this thread for the first time. Can't get to the range this weekend but will next weekend and shoot some targets. GOTTA GET READY ANYWAY FOR DEER SEASON (I shoot my 6" Model 29 in deer season).
Looks like fun. In the meantime, I'll post a photo of my Model 36 snubby I initially got my wife (she didn't like it). After I shot it I knew it was a keeper.
First target from the old flat latch, 148gn. wadcutters @ 10 yds, standing unsupported. Hopefully I've still "got it." This looks like fun!
PS: My homemade targets are black squares, with 1" for every 10 yards. It makes a perfect sight picture for handguns over iron sights! Thus, these are exactly 1" squares. My 25 yard versions are thus 2 1/2" squares. Try that type, and it will give you a great sight picture resting the blades at the base of the squares!

Well, ****!
I got to the range today, and was proud as hell about this one... but I should have read the rules again. Specifically "Left AND Right".
Below was my left - as I'm a southpaw.
I forgot the opposite hand. I'll get back by there in a couple weeks... Never tried that before... hope I get it on the cardboard.

OK, I get 2 5/8" group. YOU measure it and report back.
You were not supposed to tell us yer a lefty. Just shoot the target and report which hand it was shot with.
I will be trying this again with a 36 next trip to the range. I shot the last targets in my back yard. Once a week is enough.
Harley fan, I see you have a 45. Want to start a match?
Does a 3" officers model count as a snubby?
