Default Gainesville Shoot March 5th, 2016

Sorry about the image sizes the forum software does not seem to resized them to fit the page.

A friend I have know for over 30 years giving the .44 a shot for the first time.

A great turn out.

This is an interesting set-up but it would make it difficult to use for anything but the steel.

Actually the Ken Light mount seems like it would work well for deer hunting if you still hunt, which I do. Great for holding the revolver steady for long periods of time! Not much for holster use, but I've never much used a holster until after the deer is down for good.

Some cleaned up images, sorry for the delays, it took multiple gyrations to get them uploaded! (forgetting to have the computer for a day didn't help any...)

Four turkeys and only his first shoot! Reckon this fellow might be onto something.

It's not just a bunch of old dudes:

There's even one regular steel buster who's not even close to being old enough to drive!

OH, and thanks, sw282, for taking photos! My cameras were MIA. (One still is.) As stated elsewhere, just NOT ready for the match. But learned a lot, anyway. Back on track, hopefully.

Jay, I think I even hit the 100yd ram a couple of times. I felt pretty good driving home Sat. I'd never had a chance to stretch out with my 44s beyond 25 yds. I had a great time and hope to catch up in a few weeks.

Will be likely using a new load for future .44 revolver entries with bare lead bullets. Went so far as to rezero the 29-3 10 5/8" default Field Pistol gun. A big decision for me! Was ages getting loads to do well, so any ammo change for my usual entries isn't taken lightly.

Just FYI, it consists of filling the case with Reloder 7 or IMR 4198 to the base of the bullet. Removes any tendency to lead the forcing cone, but, more importantly, it isn't powder position sensitive. We've been noticing at distances past 50 yards that having the powder charge forward (i.e., coming up on the target from a muzzle down start) results in much lower impact. (Or in my case raising the muzzle high before pulling the trigger on the odd occasion makes for high (to VERY high whilst using .45 Colt) misses!)

Interestingly, using the same powder measure setting results in different charge weights between 4198 and RL7, but the case fill and the POI out to 100 yards are pretty much identical using the same sight settings. Best 100 yard accuracy seems dependent on the particular revolver, but there haven't been enough ten shoot groups done to be sure as they're both pretty good.

Will be a while fine tuning the new combo, but initial testing has been very promising. A few minor drawbacks: You're going through 2 1/2- 3 times as much powder, recoil is a little more noticeable, and unburned powder grains can get under the extractor star if you don't change the unloading process. If hits increase, then I reckon it's worth it!

BTW, for those few of you wondering what sort of match this was and have gotten this far: IHMSA- Metallic silhouette. We were all shooting either Field Pistol (FP) or Field Pistol Any Sight (PAS) entries.

One further note for the day: Shot the Ken Light scope mount equipped .44 on Friday without glove or long sleeves. (Mostly out of laziness, but with the knowledge that there had been no indications of trouble with PPE.) There was no breeze, blast or particles about the scope holding hand. A warmish wind was felt about the arm from the cylinder gap leakage. Note that the loads weren't full power magnum pressure, though!

The rig and hold was inspired by the best standing shooter in IHMSA, who shoots Big Bore with a muzzle brake equipped Contender chambered in some high powered round, so not exactly trail blazing work on my part. Merely copy catting!

That'd be in Georgia. A lot closer to Tenn than Fla. C'mon down!
