Thumbs up Last IHMSA match for 2016

Good turnout for the wheelgun shooters! S&Ws and Rugers both on the line, including some .22 action by one of our newer shooters. Couldn't have had better weather! But Sherri had to watch over her father who broke his hip, which meant no organized fine lunch. May have been my downfall, as re-entry in Field Pistol Any Sight was much more difficult to shoot. Targets were much more "jumpy"! Was hoping for another 30+ score but will have to wait 'til next year. (29 and 27 scores this time.)

Kdiver58 did not shoot. Instead, he did yeoman duty spotting for many folks and did lots of target resets and painting. So he got to coach his wife (shooting a scoped Ruger .22 Charger) to her first 40 out of 40! Which meant she had to lose the bipod. New challenge for her will be learning to shoot that pistol without any artificial support. One of these days we may get her to shoot a Standing entry, I hope!

We had talked about doing Bordello (Short barreled guns, no sight adjustments after five sighters) style entries last thread. A slow start: I shot a Model 67, taking down 15. Didn't have the sights quite right and had to hold well left the entire match, whilst also employing a bit more Kentucky elevation than anticipated out to Turkeys. Ram elevation was about as expected, unless the muzzle was raised before sighting. Powder position sensitivity really makes a difference at 100 yards!

But the other entry was much more challenging! A Centennial airweight .38 Spl. S&W fielded by another IHMSA buddy. 8 out 40! With hits at every bank, including THREE Turkeys! He gets the Superman award for this match. I think Kdiver got some video.

SW282 downloaded his .460 S&W and had quite the time of it. Big ole' beast of a revolver. Fortunately no beastly muzzle blasts!

Meanwhile, 75Vette seems to have exceeded the limitations of his plated bullets! Very interesting, if somewhat scary, to watch as bullets went wandering off in all sorts of odd directions. I just had to try a few myself with the same results. Loaded rounds looked normal and recoil felt uniform, if somewhat on the warm side. It's just not so easy building super accurate loads for long cases that perform well at "non punishing" levels! Sorry that he has to climb that steep and tall learning curve. But it seems to go with the territory. Weirdly, we all seem to have different approaches, even whilst sharing info freely.

Already going into withdrawals. Have goals to meet and new things awaiting test in competition! Looking forward to February.

Even with the frustrating and baffling ammo issues it was an enjoyable day. It was great to see Kdiver's wife shoot that perfect 40 and seeing the grin on jaymoore's face shooting that 29 score!! I got to shoot "BamBam", sw282's PC 460 a few rounds. What a hand full!! Appx 6lbs with scope and ammo. I got a few pics to share as well.

jaymoore shooting his 67 ala "Bordello"

sw282 and BamBam

And a hard hitting Super Blackhawk

In Post #2 you got a photo of "Superman" watching the Super Blackhawk do it's thing.

Also, here's a link to SW282's thread in the Modern S&W Forum:

BAMBAM 460 PC Goes Hunting

BTW, y'all weren't there to watch me shoot a missed Pig on the re-entry. Had missed only #3 Pig on the second bank (cleaned the first bank, happily) but since it was isolated I mistook it for #5! Can't say it rattled me, as more Turkeys went down than on the first go, but Rams were a travesty. Could NOT hold steady! Could have had a 28, though, except for stupidity.... ETA: Robert "Prime" saw the event and didn't let it go without comment.

You'd think it would be easy enough to count to five but I catch myself losing count concentrating on aim. Too bad you couldn't count the "shoot one get three free" on the ram hits!!

Interesting thread...I did not know IHMSA still existed. The gun magazines I get don't cover silhouettes. I only shot steel at distance once many years ago and I was untutored, unadvised and pretty pitiful..I think I got a couple down. I then went all in for USPSA which suits my temperament better.

Thanks for posting that. I have to admit I do miss IHMSA Silhouette shooting. I was never very good at it but it was fun! I shot my 6.5-inch 29-2 with Keith-bullet handloads and believe it or not, did better than I expected - based on the equipment I had read about others using.

You guys seem to be having a great time.

So l stay away from that part of SillyWets..

Gonna have to hit the
weight room lf l keep shooting my 460PC. Smith website says the
gun is 84 ounces. Pretty sure scope and ammo push it close to
7 pounds..Thing gets HEAVY real quick

We used to shoot IHMSA at our range, but it faded away soon after the USPSA "action shooting" became all the rage. I still miss the long range, and especially the field pistol, 1/2 size out to 100 yards. Those were fun. I did enjoy the 22RF, and did pretty well for a time.

So...What you are saying is you keep score for yourself, just not turning 'em in, hmmmm?

No worries, mate. You're safe, entertaining, kind and inspire others to join in the fun, so happy that you keep on showing up with your various beasties. I keep score just to try and see if what I'm trying is helping or hurting. Have wanted to do well with revolvers in Field Pistol for almost twenty years and just in the past couple/three years made significant progress. SO MANY things haven't worked, it's amazing!

Somewhat surprised there's not some IHMSA in your state. Ohio still has at least three active sanctioned clubs, and there's more that still shoot unofficially about. (I shot in an unsanctioned match in TN a year or two ago,) Seems most of our regulars drive anywhere from an hour to three hours to shoot in the two sanctioned matches in our state each month, just to measure the degree of enthusiasm that exists for the sport, yet.

Just a Big Bore rookie myself, mostly because Field Pistol has long been my favorite niche as well.

Liking the "Five Straight Downed Critter" pins! Did you have to clean the bank or was it any five consecutive X's?

If you can work up a good load and figure out from where the elevation deviations originate I suspect you may surpass the rest of us revolver shooters in relatively short time. Just so long as Robert Prime or Melvin don't decide to whup us with their secret weapons! Kdiver58 fought for about three (or is it four now???) years to get to where he is today. He's a fairly conservative experimenter, though. I'm more the mad scientist and probably not the best actual trigger puller.

Near as I can tell from studying the monthly (but now somewhat spotty)IHMSA scores reported and published by IHMSA headquarters, we may be the best bunch of wheelgun shooters in Field Pistol in the country, on average. Joe Cullison could change that, singlehandedly, if he chose to, though!

Jaymore, we used to drive up into Iowa to shoot. Can't remember the name of the range, but it was in an old quarry with the high wall past the Ram line. Made an ideal location.

Dunno any more at this time, but found this right quick:

"by Alvin * 20 Feb 2011, 08:49
The Iowa Handgun Metallic Silhouette Club, located at the Tri-State Gun Club range near Montrose, Iowa (in South East Iowa) will be starting their 34th season in April. We shoot on the second Sunday of the month, April thru October. We offer Big Bore and Small Bore. We also shoot .22 rifles, divided into two categories, at the same time. Set up time is 9 am and we'll shoot until we're done. This club was started in 1978 has been shooting ever since. We are a very laid back group and hope that you'll be able to come and shoot with us sometime. If you have any questions you can contact me at 319-572-1277"

I hope your predictions are right. I've really enjoyed the new found hobby and hanging around with you folks. I'll have a few months to try and find the "right" load and go on from there to figure out my elevation issue.
BTW, say a prayer for our buddy sw282. He's under the knife today for cataract and lens replacement surgery. If all goes well (and it will) he may not need the scopes anymore!!

DA only, 1 7/8" barreled Centennial shot on a whim (i.e., he hadn't tried this before with this revolver!) and gets 3 Turkeys!!!! Managed hits on every bank, even at 100 yards. What's also impressive is that even the misses were close, even if they don't always show up well on the video.

Video starts 1 minute into Pigs, after three hits. No Pigs on second bank, then Turkeys where close-ups begin.

Video wasn't planned either; it gets better as you go. Thanks to Kdiver58 for shooting the vid. and to "Superman" for allowing us to show it!

Our match director has displayed some enthusiasm for Bordello, so get your "nightstand guns" warmed up. Just remember, no sight setting changes (on adjustable sight guns) after the five sighting shots.
