Default New glasses and a better score at the Big Bore IHMSA match

Had a lens made to my new prescription (with an additional +.5 diopter added) for the Knobloch frame. Astigmatism had grown noticeably worse this year, and it's refreshing to be able to have a sharp front sight again!

Drug out the 10 5/8" AFS 29-3 (#2- sighted for 50, 100, 150 and 200m) for the first time in a while and shot it as my second entry of the day. Breezy and with mixed lighting, due to fast moving clouds, I didn't have much hope of achieving much with the usual pokey swaged LSWC bullets.

But the five sighter shots weren't bad (Thanks to whoever designed that lovely AFS, changing zeroes is SO simple!) and the 10 50m Chickens all went down! Woo-hoo!

Pigs were less cooperative, finally made a slight front sight correction, and slightly changed POA as the sun ducked in and out of the clouds. Six down. Not looking too promising at this point as Pigs should be rather easier than anything to follow.

First bank of Turkeys also failed to cooperate, impacts mostly circling the critters, however the next bank was facing the other way, which MAYBE had something to do with four of five going down! Six altogether.

Bank one of Rams was downright depressing. Hoping for more than three, a couple of shots were oddly well away from where they were supposed to go! Wind? Dunno.

Last bank. Decided to really follow through on each shot and not start recovery until the target went down. Which seemingly takes forever! All slow motion it is. Rewarded with four of five, missing only the next to last Ram. Felt good, but failed to connect.

After low expectations after a longish hiatus from BB revolver, I was shocked to find this was my high score to date! 29 of 40.
Was in roughly middle of the pack of the Freedom Arms shooters, so happy with the results. Hoping to do just a little better next time!

Many thanks to kdiver58 for a fine job spotting!

It's good to hear you broke out the 44 again...and rung in a good score too! Did sw282 beat his usual score of 42??

Hard to tell, as he doesn't want to discourage the other shooters by turning in his score sheet!

BTW, I beat my Unlimited entry by one as we just could NOT find the Turkeys. Had the micrometer sight backed down to the Pig setting before connecting a .223 77gr bullet with Turkey number nine. A straight 20 before that!

Hand operated AR cobbleness (ARthing #2) using an old Colt lightweight carbine barrel cut off a little. Gas port covered with a hose clamp. ARs are SO easy! Even used dirt cheap store bought Hornady Steel Match ammo. It toppled Rams every time once I found them. (First time out with this pistol, except for the previous day at a non-metric range where we couldn't put out anything resembling a 150m target.)

The scoped AR pistol (ARthing #1) hit ALL the big targets last month, and 7 out of ten half scale shoot off targets. Amazing.

Believe it or NOT, l turned in my card.. l guess mine got lost somewhere..

l shot my629-4 Classic with .227'' Patridge gold bead front sight..

Shooting a revolver STANDING w/open sights is the most

difficult in IHMSA. Not gonna make a FORTY doing that position. Don't

think its ever been DONE

Got my astigmatism taken care of last year during cataract surgery with

a TOREX lense implant. Could have bought quite a few Smiths with that money..

I believe you are correct, not even with a single shot! J Cullison is probably the second man to do a perfect Standing BB score, but it was Unlimited Standing using a TC with a variable power scope. His feat is being the first to make a perfect US BB score at a 60 round match!

There has yet to be a perfect 40/40 in Field Pistol as well. Very few in Field Pistol Any Sight.

Don't want to make that sound better than it is, as I was well back in the overall standings! But 29 was roughly in the middle of the range of scores turned in. Need to be in the mid 30s to have any sort of chance of placing near the top at our range. Old 29s aren't known for their long range accuracy, so you see very few on the BB line any more. Of the twenty BB revolver shooters at the IHMSA Internationals this year, only one used anything but a Freedom Arms and he used a Dan Wesson. (Eighth place finish)

After years of frustration, using oversized swaged lead projectiles with a case full of slow burning powder seems to have minimized the unexplained fliers or shotgun patterns experienced at distances past 25 yards. At this point a truly good shooter is needed to see what further potential remains....

Or maybe S&W could do a new run of long barreled AFS revolvers! (Fat chance of that happening.)

lf Smith&Wesson simply made a narrow front/rear sight combo it would

help long range shooting a BUNCH... l think Smiths' replaceable front

blades are Great and they really do work. Very hard to find tho:-(

The newer .44 revolvers surely are more accurate than the older. Even with lead bullets. I like the extra sight radius of the 10 5/8" and the "Set and Forget" feature of the AFS. Even standing, the 10 5/8 incher handles well. The full underlugged 8 3/8" versions get kinda heavy when optics are added. OK "as issued".

I use a 8-3/8" 629. It has a 2-7 power Burris scope. I have developed a load that shoots 6" groups at 200 meters, smaller groups closer in. I have shot 2 40/40s in UAS with it over the years shooting only double action. For the benefit of others, this is the load.

Starline .44 Mag case, CCI LP Mag primer, 18 gr. H4227, 300 gr. Hornady XTP. This is a fairly mild load, muzzle vel. 1050 fps by chronograph, 200 meter vel. 900 fps. by ballistic chart. The recoil is more like a .44 special, I've shot 80 rounds in a day many times with no ill effects or any pain in hands or joints.

Never knew anyone that shot sillywets DoubleAction before.. Guess lts

whatever works that's important.. I generally stay shy of heavy 300s.

They will make them steely dans jump tho from a couple boxes of 300gr

Cast Performance boolits l've shot in the past.. Hornady XTP is a mighty

fine boolit, one of the companies better products l hear.. Sierras have a

soft place in my heart. Unlike Hornady, a company that makes everything

from boolits to dies, presses, even washing machines for brass.. Sierra is

a boolit maker.. That's ALL they do...

I used to shoot my XP-100 from the Creedmore position years ago. As I recall, a really good score for me was in the 35 range. Now, I can't hold the gun steady enough to shoot from that position, so I shoot in the Big Bore, hunter, long course class. Last time I shot (3 months ago) I scored a 40. But of course, I was cheating. I was using a rear bag and shooting a scoped XP-100. I am in awe of those of us who can shoot IHMSA without support.

Default New Lens Help Too

I had cataract removal surgery in both eyes over the past two weeks. Can't believe how bright the world is and how vivid the colors are. It's also nice to be able to see the fron sights in all their glory. Going to unlimber the M&P with the red dot soon.

You must like to make life difficult for yourself! Not only an IHMSA shooter, but BB UAS with a revolver. Never mind the DA aspect. (I can't imagine shooting .44s DA one handed safely past 25 yards, but my paws aren't all that big.) The two 40/40s I've shot in the past year in BB UAS had to be followed up by 1/2 scale shoot off targets at 200m to determine the winner! (9/10 and 7/10 with a 7TCU and a .223 respectively.) Those 1/2 scale targets only present 1/4 the surface area of the full size targets....

For a comparison, the top 13 shooters at this year's IHMSA BB UAS Internationals all shot 80 out of 80 whilst the top Revolver shooter got 78/80 with scores dwindling downhill immediately thereafter in the class. (This same shooter had outstanding scores in other classes, BTW, taking several wins.)

I haven't seen the need for either, running soft swaged bullets weighing 240 grs not very fast. And the twist rate seem sufficient for 300 gr bullets according to those folk I know that have tried them.

But whatever it takes to get S&W making long range revolvers again in the "lesser calibers" like .357 and .44 Magnum.

Finally got photos uploaded! (Still used to P'bucket, but Imjur seems to be OK.)

The wee dots are the half scale Big Bore targets! Sun and cloud rapidly alternated, often in the middle of shooting a bank of five. Open sights need slight correction for the varying light, lest a bullet drift off target high or low.

Ol' #2 back in action. (#1 has it's sights set for Field Pistol distances.)

Against the "top shooter" on the left wielding one of his Freedom Arms revolvers.

I don't shoot one handed. I cheat and shoot prone with 2 hands. Everyone shoots this game single action, 2 minutes for 5 shots. I feel it is more of an achievement to get the hits DA. So I shoot as fast as I can make the hits. I average 5-6 seconds for a bank of chickens or pigs, then slow down to 10-12 seconds for a bank of turkeys or rams. So far, my best time is 40/40 in a total shooting time of 1 minute, 24 seconds. A lot of folks don't believe that, but all the locals have seen it done.

l think you could make yourself a bit of extra money with a couple

videos on ''youtube'' with that kind of fancy shooting Toolguy.. Just

set the camera up behind showing the targets falling while blasting away.

Put a stopwatch inset to the video...Good shooten. l'd love to see you do

your stuff.. l think we ALL would..

I haven't been able to locate the video of shooting Silhouettes. That one was from 1995 (I think) and the score was a 39/40 with one shot going just over a turkey. I haven't shot Sil. much in the last few years, but they are having a match this weekend so I will go and try to make a new video to show what I'm talking about. Probably won't have the scores I had when doing it a lot though.

I went to the match last Sunday. I'm not as fast as 20+ years ago when I was doing it a lot, but still was able to hit a few. I start when they say "Fire!", then wait the 2 minutes for everyone else to finish.

Tracy is working out some issues with photos, so I'll edit this when she's gotten it figured out. It will be a few days.

Below are some videos. I'm sorry there's no sound, but Tracy is working on it...

Apologies to jaymoore, I didn't intend to take over your thread, I was just sharing a .44 load with fellow Sil. shooters. Best regards to jaymoore, sw282, 75Vette, and all the other Met. Silhouetters out there. It's great to see that some people are still shooting Metallic Silhouette, our club is down to just a few, and I have only shot rarely in past years.

Big Bore, 200 meters. The Field Pistol and .22 rams at 100 meters are in front of the Big Bore pigs.

Impressive TG, in many ways. Your shooting style is novel and doable..

I would be interested in seeing a closeup of your gun showing the forend

closer detail.. Don't know if l could l adapt since l am left-handed and right-eyed.

The mounts used to set the CHICKENS is quite unique also.. Not much

chance of "Rick Oshae" claiming any HITS. The range J Moose and l shoot

is located in a pasture.. Your target mounts would not be Cow Friendly :-(.

Thanks for sharing. Don't E V E R stop shooting. That's what Old Horace

and Dan invented/made those guns for.. "SHOOTEN"

Thanks for the kind words, sw282. I will see if Tracy can put up a pic of just the gun when she has time. I'm somewhat computer challenged, but she is a computer genius.

I never stopped shooting, just doing different games now.

Innovative fore end mods to the revolver to take advantage of a shooting style that obviously works for you! Too bad it throws the revolver into UAS, but once there you are able to utilize all the advantages, i.e., porting, sights, grips, etc.

I think I will stick to my manually operated AR kluges for now in UAS. Heavy weight .223 projectiles have been taking down Rams reliably, just so long as I avoid the "heart/lung" area shots.
