Default Why I will never be a national champion shooter

The New Zealand IPSC Handgun nationals were held mid November with the Cowboy Action Nationals the following weekend. Both events were held at my local club this year (we are one of only two clubs in the North Island with enough ranges to hold an IPSC Nationals and non eof the South Islanders want to so we do it year about).

I shot well enough at the IPSC's to get a bronze medal in my Division/Grade, but I was so far down the list from the National Champion that, for a day or so, I was considering moving divisions where the winners score was not so high. But no, I'll stay in my beloved Classic Division although next year I am going to shoot minor in a few Level II matches to see if I can justify doing so at Level III's.

The winner is young, under 30, and lightning fast. Interestingly this year he moved back to shooting a .45 in major instead of the 9mm minor he has shot for several years.

I ended up not competing in the Cowboy Nationals. With the amount of time I have been away from home this year I just have not been in a position to shoot a full Cowboy match, although I did get to shoot a half a club match the day before my wifes transplant. This years' National winner was our former, and again current, junior champion.

That's right, our Junior champion is also the National champion. At 16 years old "Rooster" is a slick shooter.

Bradley McDowell wins NZ Cowboy shooting title - NZ Herald

Now I just happen to know young Rooster, he is a member of my own pistol club. And I suspect that not even the attraction of girls to a 16 year old growing boy will sway his current focus on wining a world junior title, if not next year then the year after.

And he has plenlty of time to take out the world title too. After all, he has youth on his side, which is more than most of us have.

Congrats to Bradley and Gang! I get to see some NZ people every year at the NRA Bianchi Cup. They're a fun bunch to hang with, and some very good shooters too.

A month or so back I had the pleasure of shooting a 2 day 12 stage (okay 1 1/2 day 8/4 stages) IPSC competition with the current NZ Classic Division title holder.

He is young, under 30.

He is fast.

He shoots factory PMC .45 APC rounds (rather hot compared to most competition rounds) having just gone back to the .45 after a few years shooting 9mm.

He is an all round nice guy. No ego and helpful to all.

I spent most of the match scoring. He was the only one to approach me and volunteer to take over when my time to shoot was getting close (the times I had to ask for a replacement). He patched and rest targets on every stage.

A great guy to shoot with.

Sounds like a pretty good weekend. BTW, Richard Munt will be here in May for the World Cup (World Championship) and Bianchi Cup (National Championship). This year, for the first time, the Bianchi and Worlds are back to back at the same range. The World is only every other year. In 2016 the World was in NZ.

Who is the young IPSC guy?

The current NZ Classic Division National Champion (for the last few years) is Heaton Chen.

The 2016 World Cup was held in Whangarei in Northland. I still have a (rental) house up there and thought about heading up for an inspection and stopping off to watch but couldn’t put it all together at the time.

Richard is a good guy. I broke the rubber ring on the small collet on my inertia bullet puller last week and couldn’t find one of the three sections. When I telephoned Richard to buy a whole new pullerbhe told me just to use a shell holder for the calibre I was pulling. It works well and cost him a sale LOL

I just received notification through the Pistol New Zealand magazine that Richard has been named part of the official NZ team for he Worlds.

I might get a chance to give him a bit of stick about it when I take my wife back up to Auckland next week.

Richard is one of the smartest guys I know. Really funny too! All the NZ guys are very good shots.

Have him show you the mover front sight if he has it at the shop. Come by and visit if you ever get a chance.

Default World Junior Champ

I ran into, young Bradley (“Rooster”) last weekend, the first time I had seen him since he attended EOT.

Yep, he is now World Junior EOT Champion.

Even better, he made the adult/all shooters top 16 and went into the shoot off.

Just a pity our travel plans had to be put back from June to October. Would have been good to attend the last public open day and watch him shoot.

Yeah hard to beat good eyes & fast hands. We have a 16yr old start shooting idpa with us last year. Fast forward one year he is now a master shooter & sponsored by several gun manf. Great kid, he'll go far. We shoot together 1-2x a month & sometimes I can steal a stage from him but tough to hang with good eyes & fast hands at my age.
