IDPS 645 JM idea
I have recently started limited IDPS shooting with my favorite revolver a 3' 686P. only problem 7 shot are official allowed I am told. I have always wanted a JM645 5'' since I let my 1955 target get away years ago.
I have a couple of 1917 so are famaliar with moon clips and have the tools.
Any recommendation---Thanks in advance

You can only have a 4" barrel in IDPA. A 625 is a viable contender. Kind of big for concealed carry, but fine for the match. The 645 is a semi-auto.
I'm shooting a 4" 686 converted to .40 S&W. Smith has made these before, they are called 646. Kind of hard to find and pricey, so I just made my own.
Many of the .38 special or .357 6 shot guns work fine for IDPA too, and can be moonclipped.

I have a 625 JM and have used it successfully in IDPA. Good gun, you can’t go wrong.
The two biggest restrictions in the revolver division is 6 round capacity ( meaning 686+ or 627-8 shots are illegal) , and as mentioned above, no more than a 4” barrel.
That said, I’ve enjoyed shooting revolver division with my M15, M24-3, M625 and Ruger GP100WCII. Give it a try, am sure you’ll have a good time.

I shoot my 625 4" in IDPA and USPSA matches and have a HOOT with it and lots of moon clips.
I'm not a speed demon, however it is not often I have rounds out of the A zone or down zero.... Just love hearing the RO call out All Alpha or down Zero over and over again!
RO's just love the big holes next to each other and the brass monkeys enjoy picking up MY brass!

IDPA does allow 7 & 8 shot revolvers, but the gun and all loading devices can only be loaded with 6 rounds. Means you have to index the empty chamber (in the OP's 686+) under the hammer when you reload.
Also, the barrel length limit is 4.25" - a seeming small difference, but some manufacturers produce guns for export to countries with a minimum allowable barrel length of 105 mm (4.13") and this allows these guns to be used in IDPA. Plus IDPA is an International organization so the same applies. I sometimes compete with a Brazil contract 586, which has the fractionally longer barrel.
To the OP, for convenience's sake, you can have a 6-shot cylinder fitted to your 686+ should you so desire - otherwise just load six and you're GTG. Also, as to a 625 recommendation, I went with a 625-8 PC. Check out the thread entitled: Best 45 ACP Revolver for IDPA, in this same section (Competition).
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Thanks for the correction my memory is OK just my typing is not so go. I planned on a 4" knowing not a 5" available and yes it is the 625 revolver I plan on and not an auto.
Do appreciate all the helpful comments from everyone

Pizza Bob is correct, however, having a 7 or 8 shot revolver and only loading 6 rounds complicates your reloads significantly. But it’s permitted & I stand corrected.
