Default 625JM IDPA holster, etc recommendation

I posted this earlier on the Leather/ Holster section perhaps the wrong place so will try here.

I have shoot a couple IDPA with a 686P and speed loaders. I am about to get a little more serious with a 625JM and moon clips. I am not semi-pro class by any means.

I have read about the IDPA rules and Blade Tech as a source any recommendations what to try holster and moon clip holder.

Always respect you guys opinion

I had a local holster smith make a kydex holster for mine as well as some moonclip holders...will hold 4 loaded moonclips on each for USPSA Revolver.
Before that I used a Kramer Revolver scabbard...still works fabulous for me!
IDPA is different in what is allowed for extra ammo. I usually use just one of the carriers, although I did find that HKS speedloader pouches work very well for me.

I have a holster I really like for IDPA. It's a Galco L159HOD FL104B. I'm shooting a 686 with moonclips in 40 S&W with it, I assume they make the same one for a 625. My gun is essentially just a scaled down 625, so they are pretty similar.

A 686 chambered for .40 S&W? A 610 yes, but I am not aware of a 686.

My L frame .40 S&W is a 646, titanium cylinder, no longer in production.

Because of the clip gun having to shoot 155PF vs 105PF for the speedloader gun, I am currently shooting a Model 66 with speedloaders and .38.
I don't consider the clip gun an advantage under current IDPA ammo rules; there is only one Revolver Division.

I use Safariland holsters for IDPA Revolver

What I have is the same as a 646 with a stainless instead of Ti cylinder. I could not find a 646 that I was willing to spend that much on ($1500 to $1850 at the time I was looking for one).

I had a couple of 686es that I wasn't using for anything special, so I had Manson Reamers make me a custom .357 to .40 revo chamber reamer and made a 4" and a 6" .40 S&W.

I rechambered the cylinders and cut them for moonclips and rebarreled both. The 4" got a 646 takeoff barrel I found on the net (very hard to come by) and the 6" one got the original barrel sent out, rebored and rerifled to .40 cal. It still says .357 on the side, I need to redo that one of these days.

I suspect there are not too many .40 cal. 686es out there. I probably have the only .44 Auto Mag revolver too.

WOW! What a lot of work on your gun.....Sounds sort of like a 610 in an L frame.
Did you do all of the machine work?

Yes, I did all the machine work. I'm a tool & die maker by trade, and have a complete machine shop at home.

Back on topic, I think my IDPA moonclip holders are Cali. Competition ones. They are a metal clip with a 6 segment plastic piece in the middle, each one holds one moon clip.

I am wrong on my moonclip holders, they are like the North Mountain holders in the Dillon Blue Press.

I use a Blade Tech holster for my 625-8PC, but apparently Blade Tech is transitioning to some new manufacturing process and have dropped many of their holsters. Last I looked - none for the 625. That may have changed by now. In the alternative, Comp Tac would be the way to go.

For moon clip holders, I use the North Mountain stacked holder - holds two clips, and then one of the spring steel with a metal post (Midway carries them) for my third clip. I load strong hand so the NM holder goes in front of my holster and the spring steel holder goes behind. That third one is seldom needed, but nice to have.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I just bought a Safariland holster Model 568-13-651 for my 5" 625-6. Looks like a good fit and well-made, but I haven't road-tested it yet. And I have no idea if it's legal for competition.

It appears to be a legal holster for USPSA and IDPA.

I use a safariland paddle holster for my 625 & am very happy with it- more so than my blade tech. As for moon clip holders, I have a set from ready Tactical- not sure they make them any more, but like their speedloaders carriers, I prefer them

I haven’t started IDPA yet, but I got a Speed Beez Holster for my 625-8 PC. My favorite holster maker, Warbird Leather out of AZ, made me one for my 627-5 Pro Series that also fits my 625 for when I feel like it. And for the mountains or cruddy weather, I have a leather pancake from Wright Leather Works.
