OK, quick background. I'm 62, been shooting since I was 7. Retired California Highway Patrol officer. When I started on the job I shot a Colt Trooper MkIII .357 with 6" barrel.

I plan on starting to shoot some USPSA coming this January. While I love the 1911, I'm also a revolver guy at heart and thought it would be fun to shoot a revolver instead of the 1911 as everybody seems to shoot the 1911, so just bought a 6", 6-shot, 586. I have a bad back, intestinal problems, so I'm over weight and out of shape, so I don't plan on being a champion on any level.

I plan on shooting the stock revolver for a long time, but I'm sure there will be things that I might like better if they were modified. Just curious what types of modifications, if any, I should look at and research for somewhere in the future? I don't even have the gun yet, so I know it will take some time to break in, so not looking for anything to do immediately, just curious about what types of things to plan on in the future so I can talk to my gunsmith and see costs, etc.

Suggest you read the current uspsa revolver division rules and start over, or just shoot for fun and don't worry about the score. In minor power, 8 shot is allowed in uspsa revolver

An 8 shooter is the current revo of choice for USPSA. So what - you can still have a good time with a 586. It is an excellent gun that you can shoot for the rest of your life. My setup for that would be a 6 to 7 pound DA trigger job, may want to chamfer the chambers, and fiber optic sights front and rear. Orange on the front and green on the rear. I would get 8 or 10 Jet speed loaders and a loading block (Safariland). You will need a speed loader holder, too, may already have that. I'm using 160 grain round nose Bayou Bullets for fast reloads in mine. If you want to go with moon clips, you can have TK Custom cut the cylinder for moons, then buy their clips. Then you can use loose rounds, speedloaders, or moonclips interchangably in one cylinder. The sights and trigger are the main event, other stuff optional.

Sights and trigger are what I figured. Don't care about 7 or 8 round capacity, I want my old gun, so 6" 6-shot is fine. I won't be shooting too fast and can't really run anymore, so as I said, no worries about being a champ. Mainly looking for comfort. My 1911 needed a trigger job BAD, and that was a wonderful modification, so that's the kind of thing I'm curious about. If I end up getting really good and competitive then I'll buy a Performance Center revolver, or just go back to one of my 1911's.

If you're insistent on shooting a six, you could shoot 357 magnum and at least shoot major power factor. But like stated above, competition shooting in general and USPSA (IPSC) specific is not 6-shot friendly. Most are set up in 8 shot arrays.

Replaced the mainspring with a Wolff standard weight ribbed power mainspring, a 12/13 Ib trigger return spring and then mainspring screw with an 8-32 X 1/2 hex head screw. That'll improved the trigger a lot.

I have a 25 year + Gilmore Speed holster but I’d prefer something that holds the gun a bit firmer than the rubber stop. I had an old Safariland L frame holster I gave away when I got the Gilmore that I wish I’d kept (I had my 686 fall from my holster recently, fortunately it was not on the line, loaded and fell on sand).

Get the spring steel speed loader holders, or similar, not the pouch type.

And have a lot of fun.
