For the last couple years, I've been getting more involved in traditional Bullseye competition. It does seem to be a dying sport, but my buddies and I enjoy it. We're not the run 'n gun or shoot 'n scoot types. Bullseye suits us just fine. Now then . . . .

Where on earth do I buy a traditional Bullseye Pistol Box? Ebay has a number of beat up Pachmayr and Gun-ho boxes. I found nothing on Gun Broker. Precision Pistol Box offers them, but at significant cost. Strong Case made aluminum boxes, but they went out of business. Champion's Choice or Champion Shooters Supply have nothing. My local gun shops just chuckle. I'm at a loss.

Any ideas would be welcome! One would think there are lots of these boxes sitting in closets ready to be put back into use. I just don't know where.

I would get one off eBay that's not too beat up and redo it or have someone else fix it up.

I know of a super deluxe 4 gun Pachmayr with scope mount and timer with storage for ammo about 92% and not beat up but the shipping would kill it. Those things are heavy. 17 lb. empty.

Google will find you any number of plans to build your own. If you have decent carpentry skills, or if you know someone who does, you can build your own custom box designed to fit your needs. Some even include an arm to munt a spotting scope on.

Krogen, I just checked ebay and if you scroll down there is a nice looking Pachmayr case, keys and all that has a buy it now or make offer , with free shipping. My wife bought me a Strong box years ago so I use it but its heavy, compared to others. Good luck.

I'll suggest two things.

(1) Bullseye-L forum has a bunch of stuff. Including a guy that makes unfinished boxes. You can also check out a company called Strong Cases.

(2) Unless you're doing a lot of complicated matches (2- or 3-gun 2700s, EIC, etc), a box can be a distraction. The boxes themselves are quite heavy, and by the time you've loaded them up with all the stuff you actually need, plus the stuff a box accumulates, you're hauling a box of bricks. For .22 matches, I downsized to a single pistol case with six magazine pouches, and a larger pocket for a staplegun. Ear and eyepro goes on my head, spotting scope is on a folding tripod. Haven't needed anything else, and I've been quite happy.

When I competed in PPC, I was younger and stronger. I had a box that held three revolvers (it had 4 spaces), and a bunch of speed loaders. I also had a second box for my ammo, about 1200 rounds as i recall. You g and strong but not dumb. I used a two wheel dolly to get that stuff from my vehicle to the firing line, table, or wherever I was told to put it. The box is great BUT consider getting a dolly.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a Strong Case bullseye box from a forum member. It's a 5 gun box and quite large. Being made of aluminum, the box itself is light for its size. That all changed when I added 3 guns and their ammo. Full up with 5 guns and ammo, it would be pretty weighty.

I prefer to keep loose items in check. When I travel, I have a laptop bag and a suitcase. Two hands, two things to keep track of. I think I'll load the box with guns, muffs, scope etc. and put all the ammo in a mil ammo can. Everything in a container, two containers to transport. The ammo can will serve as port side ballast.

I've got a Gun-Ho, that isn't the heaviest, but when you get 3 guns, ammo, scope on a Gil Hibbard mount, muffs, etc. it is cumbersome. I bought another one at a estate sale for $1.00 as the auctioneer didn't know what it was, cleaned it up and put it in a gun auction and got $25 for it. Shipping on these is more than the value of a used box.
