Default Sunburnt scalp

I spent the weekend setting up our ranges for the 2019 North Island Speed Steel (Steel Challenge) match. It was supposed to have been held earlier this year but the March 15th Christchurch shootings meant it had to be postponed.

Saturday morning I cut, assembled and pinned down the 11 new shooting boxes the match required. Sunday we set out the target arrays and pinned them in place.

With the first weekend of summer weather here I had a wide brimmed hat for both days. Somehow during Sunday morning I left my hat in the car. When I got hime I realised that not only my face but my scalp is sunburnt. Ouch.

The match is next weekend with more summer weather forecast. Friday I shoot Production division with my Kimber Stainless II Target 9mm 1911.

Saturday I shoot Pistol Calibre Carbine (Tanfoglio P 19 (CZ75 alike) in a carbine frame) and .22 pistol (Browning Buckmark 5.5).

Sunday morning it is .22 rifle with my S&W 15-22. Except for Production my guns wear no brand holographic red/green dot sights from China. They work well and the added cost of a name brand dot just isn’t justified for one or two matches a year.

Good job on setting up the match. I know that is a lot of hard work. Sorry to hear about the sunburn, those are painful and annoying.
Best wishes for good scores in the match! I bet you'll do fine!

I set up my local monthly IDPA matches and have worked as staff as well as set up for the last 3-4 state matches- I understand the effort you gave for your match, so my hats off to you :-)

Congrats for your efforts and shooting & good luck with the sunburn

I remember my first sunburned scalp, which made me realize I was losing my hair....

Neutrogena Ultra-Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF - 55 .
Buy a couple bottles and keep them in your truck, car , shooting bag , tackle box, anywhere you might be out , forget hat and need a great sunscreen that's not greasy or oily .
Rub some on arms...when you get older the sun damaged skin shows up. I wish we had it in the 1950's - 1960's and I wish I had used more on my arms and neck when it did become available .

Same as gwpercle, but I use SPF 70 or 100. Most of my medications have the avoid or minimize sun exposure warnings, so I go for the higher SPF to help.
Of course in winter, there is the reflection off of snow just as water on the lake in summer, so sunscreen becomes a year round necessity. But in winter lots more clothes, hats with ear flaps, and even a scarf across the nose and mouth.
But as with you, sometimes I forget for that quick time outdoors, that turns into an hour or more! 🙁

Good on ya for helping set up. When I take the kiddos along I always arrive early enough to help out and set the example for the young 'uns. And working toward a purpose on such volunteer activities is the way to make good buddies.

Burned my scalp to the point of blisters and peeling skin one year in college when I was working outside that summer. Never again.

Hats, keep extras in your vehicle. I keep 2+ hats, depending on the activity & time of year. I prefer a wide brim real hat, but a ball cap or a stingy bring real hat will keep your scalp safe.

I hate sunscreen and have drifted toward wearing long sleeve, cooling tech shirts in the warm months. And thin slacks. When I absolutely must use sunscreen, BULLFROG is what sticks when it is sticky or sweaty or swimmy. Nothing else comes close. And the best sticking Bullfrog is the gel.
