Default PPC Match

Participated in the stock revolver class of the monthly PPC matchs at Harrisburg Hunters & Anglers yesterday. Match 1 and 2 were with Model 14, matches 3 and 4 were with 6” Model 28 and final Match was Concealed Carry with 2 1/2” Model 66.

This was first time I shot the 28 in PPC. Shot the 28 within a few points of the 14. Different feel to the 28. Need to shoot it more matches. The range master said he hardly saw the 28’s muzzle move with the light 38 loads😊

It was a fun match. Time to load more 38’s.

I had many a good time at Harrisburg H&A field days. Have a bunch of trophies. Used to have two a year - are they still doing that? I think my friend is a life member there.

Adios,

Bob, Harrisburg conducts one field day per year. None this year due to COVID restrictions. They had 51 shooters at the PPC match.
Another local club, Lebanon County Police Combat Pistol Club also conducts monthly PPC shoots, including 1500 matches. Plenrty of revolver shooters at both clubs.

Wow. Shot a lot of PPC in the early 90’s.
Still have my old competition gun. Took first place in Governor’s twenty for my state in 1992 and 1995. Lots of good times. No one around here shoots it any more.

I envy you your day on the pistol range!

I really enjoyed shooting PPC. I shot on two different PD pistol teams for close to 10 years and brought home my share of trophies, guns and even a state championship and a few Governor's 10 aggregate awards from state level matches. I guess we shot on average of about 5 big matches a year and we had weekly practice sessions on the PD's ranges.

I still have an open class PPC revolver in the safe as well as my old Model 14 service class revolver.

I feel fortunate to live in Central PA where we have a wide range of competitive shooting opportunities. Also participate in a local 10 team Bullseye League during Winter months. Enjoy shooting my Model 41. So I don’t get too comfortable, I also shoot in a Winter Trap League. Can be a little cool at times...

I don't recall the name, but it was the gun shop north of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station (Washington State) on Monkey Hill Rd. It's been years, and the memory is apparently going.

My best ever PPC revolver was built by Royce Weddle in Oklahoma. Another good PPC builder was Fred Schmidt in Virginia. He built my IPSC 45 auto for me and also built PPC revolvers for brother officers on the team.

I imagine that all of these guys are either retired or passed by now.

I competed for about a decade. Brought home trophies, medals and guns. Lots of fun but it was serious shooting. Lots of camaraderie also. I managed to shoot my way into the Governor’s 20 but never into the top 10. The competition was very stiff at that level.

My revolver was a Model 64-3, rebuilt by Davis. For the Distinguished leg I used a 6”, 686. For the Service or Duty leg, I shot either a Model -5-2 or a 4”, 686. My Model 36-1 got me to the top in the Off Duty leg.

I remember in the early 80's there would be over 900 shooters at the National Police Revolver Championships. Now National Police Shooting Championships around 300 these days. Its back in Mississippi these days , I would like to go and shoot all the service gun events. Not competitive enough to do the 1500 opens these days. Still have these 3 sitting in the safe may have to have a range day soon , forgot how easy they are to shoot.

CALREB,

On my Davis PPC revolver, the front sight is adjustable for preset elevations. On yours, it appears to have a knob that adjusts the rear sight. I don’t see one being significantly more advanced than the other but who did the work on those?

Aristocrat made both sight ribs. The Davis Front Adjust was designed, or suggested, by Bill Davis. It is no longer in production.

I still have an open class PPC revolver in the safe as well as my old Model 14 service class revolver.
I too was able to earn Distinguished points, State Class Championships and National Recognition in Open Revolver and Semi Auto classes.

Before retiring and moving to WA I was a member of the Riverside Sheriff's Pistol Team. I wanted to meet the guys from WA and remember Dave Workman but not the other guys.

I thought I'd continue shooting PPC after moving but life happened! I sold my Davis Windmaster and Tanaka Open guns to guys at the Honolulu P.D. and my PPC9 to a guy in Seattle.
I kept my Distinguished M14 action set up by Jim Clark Sr.!

I went back to Action Pistol Games for 15 years and now retired from competition completely. Except for Gallery Bulls Eye!

Shooting PPC was amazing! The quality of shooters from CA was outstanding! One year there were several of us competing for "Top Gun" in Open Revolver separated by only 1-2 points!. After 10 matches and at the state championships I was able to squeak by, winning with an average 54 X's to another shooter with the same average but averaging 53 X's!

Every CA match meant shooting against 5 previous National Champions! Fortunately my Department sponsored the top six highest scoring shooters with expenses and ammo!

After retiring here I developed a "PPC" league! "Practical Pistol Competition" for beginning and intermediate shooters. I also used my learned skills from PPC and POST Certification to help develop new shooters. My "pay it forward return on "investment"!

Smiles,

Where in WA are you? I'm near Puyallup and shoot a lot at the Paul Bunyan range.

Strawhat, I owned several of the front adjustable, in the early days. I still have 1 . I personally think the front sight provides a better sight picture on the rear adjustable, because its not tilted back. And holds the setting better, I was always putting loc-tite on the front adj, and making sure it was all the way in the right slot. But shooters like them both .Like KAC said they dont make the front adj any more.
Hi Al, glad to see you made it out of CA....

I started out with the front adjustable, but somewhere along the way mine became automatically self adjusting from recoil. That can be a little rough on the score when it changes during a string of fire. I ended up going to the Wichita Rib designed by Ron Power and made by Wichita Arms. Still have a 686 and a 625 with those on them.

CALREB, If this virus is over and done by September 2021 I plan on attending the NPSC. The range in Pearl is very nice, a lot more concrete than the Jackson range. Hope to see you there. Yes, AZ is a heckuva lot better than CA, I'm sure Texas is as well.

Default KAC: Shooting at Jackson NPSC!!

Were you at Jackson around 2000 when we had the "monsoon", everything flooded? Had to blow raindrops off of sights and prone was really special laying in a few inches of water! If you stood at the correct angle you could see vapor trails as the bullets left the barrel and all the way to the targets!

Smiles,

Yep, 2002. Was interesting to watch the fire ants float by while the shooting was going on. Carbide smoke wouldn't stay on the sights, had to use a black Sharpie. Ah, fun times!

I liked the rubber bands to hold up the target pieces. I used to qualify in a gas mask sometimes , after gassing some recruits. I loved to hear the other guys complain about the fumes. Maybe it was training for NPSC.

One of the older guys walking off the range after getting soaked was laughing about the rain! He said it saved him from having to walk the 500 yards to the "porta-potties"! He said he just relieved himself on the line, nobody would notice!

Good times,

My first open revolver was an RP! A fellow PPC shooter had two Bill Davis Windmasters And offered to trade. So I ended up With a Windmaster and a Tanaka Grade III! I sold both last year to a couple of Honolulu P.D. guys.

Shot PPC in the early '70s and really enjoyed it. Met Bill Jordan and other top grade shooters and then I became a father and had to quit the sport. I remember going to a USBP match at their academy in Los Fresnos, tx. We had to supply our own ammo to compete and I will never forget the USBP trainees shooting Ruger revolvers and all of the factory Winchester wadcutter amp they wanted, free of charge. I think back to those years with nostalgia .......10 feet tall and bullet proof!!

Default PPC

For reasons unknown to me the USBP Team shot a lot of matches in CA. Their presence upped the quality of the competition. When they did you would be shooting with the best of the best. Usually 5-6 previous national champions from USBP and CA! and other class champions.

Our team was sponsored by Winchester. The travel team received all their match ammo and enough practice ammo every month and we could by ammo at cost too! Seems that because the department bought their ammunition by the truck load. I'm sure there were at least 1 million rounds in the armory! (When I retired 15 years ago, there were 1,000 sworn!)

I remember when Robert Vadez shot his first CA match as an Expert. Knocked me "off the podium" for a few matches as he made Master pretty quick. He went on to win 4-5 NPSC's until recently. Many shooters move on after they promote up with their agencies.

Smiles,

I've shot with Rob Vadaz several times at the Bianchi Cup, which is considered the Superbowl of pistol matches. He's always at the top. He is a Border Patrol guy now.

Sorry I wasn't too clear. Rob was on one of the Border Patrol teams when shooting against him in the late 90's early 2000's.
Clay Tippet was another PB National Champion for several years.

Mark Cobb, John Pride, Jerry Eason, were a few of the CA LEO's I was chasing during that era too! Phillip Hemphill, MS. Highway Patrol was another Champion during that era. Because of the stiff competition it was common for some of the top shooters from "out of state" to attend the Western States Regional Matches and CA State Championships. I was able to "win the gold" a few times as an Expert but Master was another story!

All these guys were, as you know the "top of the top" both as shooters and approachable and willing to share their "secrets" for performance.

All around good guys!

Smiles,

Strawhat, I did pull my old guns out of the safe and fired a few shots. I had forgotten that my 30+ year old davis gun was a front adjustable, and then early on I changed it to a rear adj.

Sweet looking revolver Bob. It's begging you to take it to a match. After this virus goes away, that is. One year, I think 1993, in CA I had a 1497 average for 10 revolver 1500's and came in 3rd in the Governor's 20. Some awesome shooters there in the 1990's.

I should have posted these earlier. I sold these to a couple of Honolulu P.D. PPC shooters!

"A. C"., I think i figured out your initials! You lived in SD, and milled the slot on my Distinguished Revolver and hand filed the taller front sight for neck hold! I looked up to you and Jerry Eason as a new PPC shooter because of your friendly demeanors!

Yes Poor Alan fell into that trap, of working on other peoples guns, he patched up a few of mine. I almost went down that hole after I became an armorer, but soon learned to leave my toolbox at home, or at least hide it.
About the competition, those were pretty tough days, it sure has changed. I was at a match in 2013 or so, pretty much at the end of my 1500 shooting, and I happened to shoot a 1491. The guy scoring my target (one of the better shooters then) congratulated me and asked if that was my first 1490 score, I smiled and told him,yes--- this decade. He looked at me kinda odd and walked off...

I don't recall which range that had a "hump" about half way to the targets. When shooting prone some of the target numbers would disappear but the "colors" were still visible. At the first 50 yard prone I "cross shot" onto Mark Cobb's target five lanes to my left! Fortunately the angle made my shots truly distinguishable! Thank goodness, his target was scored as is, he didn't have to reshoot! Down 60 points for that match made for a long ride home!

Mark was gracious, I was embarrassed to say the least!

Smiles,

John

sw dan,
That was the range I worked at in San Diego. I hosted the Paradise Classic Regional for several years, until Mike Tangas,USBP, took it over. The virus cancelled this year's event. Those were great days, shooers from all over the country.

John, I remember you. Hope I didn't screw up your guns too badly.

Alan,

Your user name took me awhile to figure out.

I lost track of you around 2003-2004 except for the "big" matches. Glad to hear from you.

AZ was on our short list for retirement but we moved to WA early 2005!

All the best,

John

See that NRA cancelled NPSC for 2020. I figured they would. Well, you guys take care and hopefully we will see each other in 2021, Lord willing and the creek dont rise.

I also shot lots of PPC back in the day. Did any of you guys notice that some tournaments referred to PPC as "Precision Pistol Competition" ?? I found that interesting because we usually shot "Police Pistol Combat".

PPC vs. PPC it just depends on the sanctioning body.
NRA PPC: Police Pistol Combat
Internationally: Precision Pistol Competition

"Precision Pistol Competition, originally and still known as Police Pistol Combat in North America, is a shooting sport focusing on precision shooting from a variety of stances at varying distances, including shooting from behind an obstacle. The competition seeks to create a measure of similarity to real world situations, and is considered one of the forerunners of practical shooting. World Association PPC 1500 is the international governing body of PPC."

I finally legged out in PPC about 15 years ago and became double distinguished. I shot PPC in the New England area, got my first points at a CT SP regional with a Dan Wesson. Finished at RI regional with a 586. My first PPC gun was a M67 built by Joe K (Kassay) in NJ. Fun times.

Great gunsmith. He worked on several of my Smiths back in the late 70’s early 80’s.

It was pretty daunting to come to the line at CA PPC matches knowing that there were 4-5 former NPSC National Champions on the line and even more Masters!

Do you remember which range had the hump in the middle? Shooting at the "50"-prone I lost track and I cross fired on Mark Cobb's target! More than a little embarrassing and down "60"!

Yup, we shot together monthly for 6 years.

We missed you through in the late 90's.

Check your PM's

Smiles,

John from RSO Pistol Team
