Default Bullseye pistol leagues, post your scores and your stories!

I’m starting my first .22 pistol league on Wednesday. I’m using my 17-9 with an ultradot matchdot and Fitz ten-o grips. We’ve got 5 scored events and a final tournament over the next 6 weeks.

Our first practice was Wednesday and i shot a 683-3x, which put me at 13th of 32 for the match. High score was a 826-15x, so I’ve got a ways to go lol.

Anyone else shooting in a league this fall? I’m also getting the stuff together to do some reloading with hopes of shooting center fire revolver in the winter and spring leagues too.

Nice setup you have there. Great revolver and great scope!

We shoot bullseye every Friday evening. In summer when the days are long we shoot outside. Short days and weather make us run for the indoor range. Outside we can shoot the regular 22, CF and 45 match. Indoors at 50 feet we just shoot 22. In January, we'll get semi-serious and participate in a regional postal match. We have determined, without a doubt, that the for-record postal targets are printed with lead repellant ink. Why else would our scores suffer when it counts?

I bounce back and forth between red dots and iron sights. with a red dot, I tend to work too hard to put that dot on the X, then when it's juuuuuust right.... YANK. It's a mind game. With irons I don't have that distraction and when I'm on, I can equal my red dot scores.

Bullseye is a fun game. I like the precision required. I'll be following the thread you started.

Looks like good shooting to me. It is a difficult game, more so with a revolver.
Our winter league doesn’t start for a couple months. Nobody shoots revolvers, everyone shoots semi-autos. At 75 I am more a participant than competitor, but they still let me shoot if I show up. 😎
Sure is fun though. Here is a couple pictures of my set up. Hammerli 280 with Ultra-Dot

Nice pistol, SS336! A friend let me shoot his Hammerli and it was a delight. I get by with an older Buckmark target, a Ruger MKIII and an S&W 41. The 41 is the best shooter of the bunch but it can be temperamental at times. It also glaringly points out my deficiencies. The original barrel isn't drilled and tapped, so I bought a newer barrel to use with an Ultradot. Any of these pistols are good enough to shoot X's, but the fit, the trigger and the sights make all the difference. I can take a super accurate pistol and get terrible scores if it doesn't fit me.

Before I bought the 280 I was shooting a Ruger MK2 with a Volquartsen kit in it and Fast Fire for a sight. Off a bench at 50’ it would put 10 shots in the 10ring, very accurate.
But like you said the fit and trigger mean a lot and the 280 fits me better. My scores improved.
It is a mental game as well as shooting game. If things feel right, you will shoot better.

League night

I’ve found that so far i shoot far better double action than single action. This is from my slow-fire on my second aggregate, first 5 I shot single action and the second I shot double action.

Small score improvement tonight to 694-7x. Next week will show if it’s a real improvement or standard variation.

League night again, and another improvement. 739-6X

Biggest jump was in my slow fire. I’m figuring how to grip the gun better for a more stable hold.

You guys are very lucky if you belong to an actual private club and have a Bullseye League!
I used to belong to a club that was founded in the 1930s. It is (was?) a pistol club. Not a "rod and gun" club. Strictly pistol.
We used to send teams to Camp Perry every year. Everyone had an NRA classification card. We ran registered matches for both NRA bullseye and International.
Then the defensive combat stuff started, and a whole new crowd suddenly showed up. It wasn't even organized, just idiots blasting away like little kids with cap guns.
The weekly bullseye league became a monthly league. Then it was dropped entirely.
Coincidentally (not!), that's when bullet holes started appearing in the walls and ceiling of the wood structure with the bullets ending up who knows where!

I fought like heck to revive it. Went through the NRA, went through CMP. The good members either quit, died, or just gave up.
There's not another private club within an hour of here. Just those horrible pay by the half-hour store/ranges (yuck!).

If you have a club with private membership, actual safety rules that are obeyed, and a Bullseye League, you are indeed very, very fortunate.
Enjoy it and preserve it!

Good Shooting to Y'all!!

PS: At least I can keep in form with my Pardini air pistols in my basement 10m range....

We have a private club at the public indoor range run by the state DF&G. There’s also a second club with a private range that I plan to join for their winter indoor 22 cowboy action league, and hopefully some Rimfire steel shoots this winter.

A step back in scores this week. I have been using a mallet at work a lot this week and I could tell it affected my grip and shooting. Should be good for my marksman 1st class rating though.

My best week and best aggregate yet. I’m really starting to get the feel how how to stage the trigger in DA for timed and rapid fire, and how to manage my grip.

I’ve been shooting in a bullseye league since 1976 with a couple of hiatus for school and military. I’ve used model 41’s, Rugers and right now I’m using a Hammerli SP20 with an ultra dot. We have 6 teams in the league and we used to travel around to shoot the matches. Since the apocalypse, we all shoot at our own clubs and keep score on the web. Most of the shooters are seniors. At 63, I’m one of the younger shooters. Most of the younger shooters are happy to bang away with their Glock and don’t want to put the time in to learn the skills needed to shoot bullseye. Once in a while we get someone who is curious but when they find out how hard it is, they don’t last long. It used to be a big deal to be in a bullseye league and most of the gun clubs around me had teams. Now it seems to be just hanging on. I’m not sure how much longer the bullseye discipline is going to last. At least where I am.

I'm looking forward to Jan. when our winter Bullseye league starts. It is only 10 weeks, we found that by keeping it reasonable in length we kept the interest of the shooters, as many do go the IPSC, IDPA matches in the summer outdoor clubs.

Our range is located still in the lower level of our Jr High School, (Originally was the High School, built in the 30's). The range is for the High School rifle team, but the adults can use it one night a week for a couple hours, and yes we had a Osha type inspection for lead contamination and we passed. We have proper ventilation, and 20 lanes with manual trolley type target carriers. We normally have about 30+ members shooting league which is a single 30 round match, all .22RF. We do accumulate scores and award classifications based on the current NRA schedule. WE do have a lot of grey hair on the shooting line, but we have a few younger ones that appreciate the discipline of precision pistol that believe it enhances their action shooting abilities.

We have had a few youth shoot in the league, if accompanied by a parent. At 80 I find it very difficult to shoot up to my former classification of Expert, it has been a slow downhill slide over the past several years, but I'm still shooting, and I did shoot a practice 91-3X timed fire last week. Unfortunately the slow fire brought my total down into the 250 range.
I've been shooting this Russian IZH35M with Vitarbo grips and a Burris FF2 for 20 years now.

That’s good shooting at any age, at 80 it pretty amazing I think.
At 75 I am also having trouble with keeping my average up. I just hope I can still shoot when I’m your age. You deserve a hardy congratulations. 👍👍

I live in Tampa. There are a couple bullseye matches around here but I am not aware of any down in Sarasota. It's not too far though. There is a club called the Wyoming Antelope Club in Pinellas Park that has an outdoor 2700 match every sunday. It's Florida so we shoot year round. (Eat your hearts out yankees lol) There is also an informal indoor match on thursday evenings where we shoot an abbreviated match. 1 slow fire 2 timed and 2 rapids for a 500 agg. at Shooters World also in Tampa.

I just bought a Model 17 on Gunbroker. It is supposed to arrive today. I am looking forward to shooting it in my thurs night indoor bullseye league as well. Presently I am shooting iron sights with a Pardini SP. I had an ultradot on it but took it off to get in shape for .22 EIC. It is my intention to not put it back on until I get my distinguished badge. I have 6pts already from an EIC match last year. I am also working on Distinguished Revolver with a S&W K38 Target Masterpiece so I figure practicing with the model 17 will be good practice for getting used to a revolver.

If anyone is in SE Michigan, the Oakland County Sportsmen's Club has a Bullseye/Precision Pistol league currently running until April. It's a private club, but guests are welcome for all of the organized shoots and matches. Last year our shooters swept the regional SEMPA match. We run both rimfire and centerfire on the indoor range at 50 feet.

I'm only an indifferent bullseye shooter, and typically act as a scorer or RSO for the matches, but I run the bowling-pin events and help out on the Steel Plate shoots. We also hold IDPA and USPSA practices and matches on our outdoor Action Pistol range in the Summer, and we're starting up Steel Challenge now.

Shot bullseye for about 10-12 years through 3 different clubs. Kept loosing our ranges. Highest yearly average was 267, quit after I finally got my 280 trophy. Fun time and the club where the NE Ohio Bunch meets still has a league called the Cuyahoga County Pistol League, CCPL. Shoots all winter and a banquet in spring when it ends.

Shot a S&W model 41 most of the time, had a Hammerli 280 for about a year but returned to the 41. Figure about 30,000 35,000 rounds went through the 41. Larry

Hi Larry,
That seems to be a trend: loss of ranges and/or closure of clubs. A lot of established clubs were kept going by guys who have moved on to that "Great Pistol Range in the Sky".
At least half the clubs where I've shot at over the decades are now gone.
One of the best was the Hart House Pistol Club at the University of Toronto. It was originally dedicated by King Edward in the early 20th century. Many Olympic level shooters got started and trained there. When it was closed, the university president made some crazy statement about the club being a relic of the Imperialist past.
By the way, Larry, when I lived in Akron, I never did find any local clubs. Just a couple range/stores. But, there sure were a lot of good shows! After I moved, I found out about a couple nice places. Do they still do the big "Pre-Nationals" match in Canton?

Jim

Bullseye shooting is a lot of fun. I am a member of a small league that has a once a month match and it is nice to compete against others who think keeping score matters.

Jim, I hear there is a bullseye club in Canton called Canton McKennley?? Not sure on the spelling, I have heard the name only not the spelling. They shoot 50 yards outside and NOSC is 50 ft indoors. There were about 12-15 teams at one point, about 150 or more shooters. Some teams shot at national guard armory’s and the Govt shut them down. A couple gun ranges had teams but didn’t like the range shut down for leagues. Now I think there are 3 clubs and maybe 8 teams,

NOSC had a lot of spin off shooters going to regional matches or national. With Camp Perry close, a lot of locals shoot there. Gonna start a thread in the other brand gun section on opinions of the Hammerli 280. Larry

It would be interesting to hear from folks on their experiences regarding the most unusual locations for a Bullseye League range
I recall a bottle factory that had an underground pistol range built in a WWII era bunker. One of their best shooters was a big Mic Mac Indian fellow who shot a S&W 29 as his centerfire pistol.
At one point, I commuted in and out of Toronto by train. One of the stops was "Long Branch", as in the famous arsenal that built Lee-Enfields. One day, I took the stop and found the arsenal a short walk from the station. It was long abandoned. There was a shooting range on the grounds. The backstop was a couple of big walls woven out of tree limbs filled with earth in between!

Yes, the Hämmerli 280 is an interesting target pistol. Excellent ergonomics, trigger, and sights. Very reliable. Easily adapted to optics. And, able to convert between 22 LR and 32 S&W wadcutter. The latter was not so hot at the 50 yd line, but was fantastic for indoor gallery matches. The snap-on brass catcher was much appreciated.
For a while, I had both the Hämmerli 280 and a Walther GSP-C, including the 22/32 conversion units.

Good evening all,
Yes, the Canton-Mckinley Rifle and Pistol Club is still active and the Pre-Perry Match is great! As indicated held the week before Perry and usually hosts between 250 and 290 competitors with many top shooters, including service teams preparing for Perry. Breakfast and lunch is a deal, camping on site, and a couple of barbeques. Here in CO we are fortunate to have an active bullseye bunch that shoots outdoors in the spring, summer and early October, then moves indoors for the late fall and winter months. Fortunate indeed, it is a great game.

Back on target!

Bullseye pistol leagues, post your scores and your stories!-9792b72e-156c-44b1-b2b3-5d7f3e0272e0-jpg

I focused on a consistent grip and body positioning. I like being fairly square to the target and having my shooting arm lined up with the target holder cable. On timed and rapid I use the DA trigger pull up guide the red dot back to the bull. On slow fire and single action, I use my other fingers to put the dot close to the bull and slowly squeeze the trigger as it moves the dot to the center of the bull.

Have shot in some dark and strange places. Basements of Sportsman’s clubs (bars) with no ventilation. In Connecticut during the 70’s
Recently at Oregon State University in the old power house. Has been used as a range for decades. The school closed it a couple of years ago. I won’t go into the reasons why….you can guess. 😬
Cool old range. Shooting positions on two floors, but targets on one big wall 50’ away. When shooting on the second floor you get kind of a vertigo effect. It’s hard to explain so here’s some pictures.

That's not bad shooting with a revolver. I've shot with guys who cant do that with semi autos who shoot every week. Hopefully my Model 17 shows up tomorrow so I can start shooting it in my thursday night indoor match.
I had an outdoor 2700 today. I shot all 22 today with my pardini. I am shooting iron sights only to get tuned up for EIC matches this coming season. I shot 812-11x 832-19x 838-23x

I got my Model 17-3 on monday. I took it to the range for lunch on monday and again on wednesday to get some trigger time on it. It shot very good. I just had to get the sights adjusted and get used to the different grip and the trigger. I must say I like it.
So thursday night is my indoor league night. We shoot a 500 pt match with 1 slow fire, 2 timed and 2 rapids. I shot my pardini first. I shot a very nice slowfire. 94-2x. I also cleaned the 2nd timed fire target 100-5x But they were not all that good. lol I ended up 484-16x.
Then we had another relay so I shot the revolver. I didnt do too bad for a first time. I had an 84 slowfire. (scorecard says 85 but it was corrected) I still dont have the sights where I want them I can live with them for now. I had some really good strings and some pretty ****** ones but for a first time shooting a match with the gun, I was pleased.

Our final fall match was last week, and it’s an open tournament. League shooters were divided in to four groups based on their average scores for the league, and I was placed in the B group.

Overall I placed 6th out of 29 shooters and won my division with a 762-5x. Best aggregate was a 259-2x and best round overall was a 95-1x in rapid fire, shooting double action. The X ring had a damn forcefield around it, I shot a near complete circle around it on 4 of my 6 timed and rapid targets. My team ended up 2nd overall.

I’m pretty happy with how this season went! I’m shooting 80 points better than when I started and feel like I’m finally starting to know my gun. The red dot has been a wonderful learning tool and I think it’s really accelerated my shooting. If or when I make distinguished expert, I’m going to go back to iron sights on the 17 I think.

Winter league starts in late January. There’s a center fire league on Wednesday and a rimfire on Friday, but Wednesday is the better night for me to shoot. Now to decide, the 2” model 10 or the 38/44 HD?

Nice going, skierd! We run weekly matches throughout the year. The postal league starts in January. Somehow, if this year is like the past, our scores will drop when it counts . . . .

Great Shooting skierd! You know you are giving those other shooters an advantage by using a revolver. lol 6th out of 29 is very respectable. If you ever switch to a Model 41 or any quality target semiauto, those guys are toast!

Some years ago I belonged to a Club that was essentially only a range and a ready room . . . in the basement of one of the local municipal buildings. Turns out that many years previous the police department in town wanted their own range and couldn't afford one. A group of local gun enthusiasts offered to build the range if they were allowed to use it in perpetuity, an agreement that they got in writing. So, they built it in the basement of what was at the time the PD building. The PD eventually got a new building and moved out, and a bunch of other town offices moved in, but the range remained and is still in use, much to the chagrin of the paper pushers immediately upstairs. The town would really like them out of there, but they've got the agreement in perpetuity and they plan to stay.

This was the final night of our Thursday Night League here too. I shot my pardini for record and got 2nd tonight against a guy who is also shooting a pardini (He beat me by 5 points) but I am shooting metallic sights he has an ultradot. I think I might still win the league though. I shot the second relay with my revolver as a makeup for any nights I might have missed. I shot better than last week with it. Still about 20 points off what I shoot with my semi auto guns. But I am going to keep at it until I can shoot them equally well.
Here is my Model 17-3 and tonights scorecard.

Haven't done much shooting in the past 25 years. Then my older brother who was 78 at the time asked me (me being a retired police firearms instructor) to help him learn to shoot. Long distance mind you, since we did this either via the phone or text/email messages over the course of the past couple years during the course of this Covid-chit. Anyway, he started sending me photo's of his targets and damn if the guy has gotten the knack of this past-time activity. Then I got to thinking, I wonder how my own shooting would hold up against his. So last fall I set up a real basic target and course, from 3yrds out to 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 yrds. Used my tried and true High-Standard and did a brief quick 7 shots sight-in on some orange stick-on rings at the various distances. Then went against the 2.5 sec. shot clock. My brother hates me now . . . . .

Winter league practice match is on Wednesday, time to get back to it. My league opened up .22 spots on Wednesday nights so I’m going to be shooting my 17 again. I just couldn’t justify burning through 700+ rounds of 38 special between practice, warm ups, and matches.

Ha! I have no doubt I’ll eventually start “playing the game” more than developing my skills. I’m still happiest with wheel guns.

I noticed the Orion targets above. Our HS Rifle coach shoots with us, and he is going to use the Orion system for scoring all our targets for us. Our League starts next week. When I shot last night, I found I have deteriorated a little more. Just can't keep the sights still enough to properly press the trigger. Even threw one completely off the target. Hmmm, maybe time to give up, but no, just keep shooting, score isn't that important.

Sunday Bullseye at the club today. Cold and damp, 30 deg and foggy. Had a nice hot fire in the woodstove. Turning targets had technical difficulties. Trigger fingers didn't work in the cold. Somebody must have moved the 50 yd line out to 100. Targets looked like constellations. Jo trounced us without mercy but with a smile like she always does.

It was a great day. A good time was had by all. Can't wait to do it all over again.

Winter league is over, and I did pretty well. I’m still learning a lot, both in how to shoot and what my 17-9 likes.

Scores for the overall league went backwards. I changed from the Fitz 10-O franzite grip to a pacmahyr gripper after the practice round, mainly because I am still using this as learning gun handling and my other k frame have normal grips. I quickly figured out how much grip pressure and handling had to change, particularly my thumb placement and pressure.

Next I tried a different ammo than I had been using, because I have so much of it in the safe. I mostly used CCI standard velocity and federal auto match previously and some blazer. I tired Remington Golden bullets for half of one match and all of a second, and that was a definite step backward. Inaccurate, Smokey, and dirty enough to start jamming up the gun after a couple cylinders where before I could almost shoot two matches without cleaning. My scores dropped about 100 points for a 900 match with this stuff… oh well. Scores and cleaning immediately improved with a change back to other ammo.

In the final match of the season I shot my best score 771/900-8x and won the .22 tournament outright.

Hey SS336,
Where abouts in CT were you shooting? I, too was shooting in CT in the 70's. I lived in Danbury, which had no range, so I shot down Rt. 7 in Ridgefield. Nice club, ground level, ready room and 50 ft. range. The .22 Bullsye league, called the Southwestern CT Pistol League consisted of about six clubs. We shot at a different club's range each Thursday from Sept. to May. Lot of members of all the clubs called it a traveling league.
I recently moved to Florida, but cannot find any shoulder to shoulder shooting in the private clubs or the pay for an hour, then scram stores.
Very interesting thread for me, anyways.

Joe, I was shooting for Quaker Hill Gun Club, Oakville Ct. we had a great team. Lots of good shooters. All the matches were in SE Ct as I remember. Made some good friends that I miss shooting with.
Funny that your in Florida now, I moved here to be closer to my grandkids from Florida.

New season, new grips. Spring .22 league starts Wednesday! I’m plateaued at ~750/900. I’m getting closer to keeping everything in the black but often have a flyer or two per target that are shooter error. I’m hoping the new grips help me grip consistently and focus on the shot more. I’ve also changed the rebound slide spring to a 14# to lighten the trigger pull.

I’ve also applied to become a member of the board for the non-profit that runs the league and signed up for the NRA RSO class. I’m ready to do more than participate and want to keep the league and shooting sports alive.

A good way to improve your scores is to train with an air pistol.
A match grade air pistol is at least as accurate as any cartridge firing pistol, plus the build quailty and shooting/handling qualities are excellent.
Another thing you can do is shoot on plain, blank paper so you can focus on sight alignment.
Here's a couple of my practice targets. The first one is probably my best ever 10 shot - 10 meter group. The second is more like my typical targets.
The air pistol is a Pardini K58.

Where can you buy Pardini air pistols in the US?

Hi,
There is a Pardini USA dealer in Florida. They sell the full line of air pistols, .22 LR standard pistols, 32 CF Int'l & Bullseye pistols, 9mm and 45 ACP GT pistols, and their new rifles.

The older stuff, like CO2 or Single Stroke Pneumatic air pistols are much harder to find. They're built like tanks, shoot like the blazes, and most people that own them tend to keep them. Occasionally, they turn up on eBay, often for good prices.

One more picture: this is a Pardini K2s that runs on compressed air. It is very similar to the current production K12.

Hey Jim, I like the looks of the Pardini K58. Ever see one for sale, let me know. Don’t they usually sell for 1000.00? Downstairs I shoot a Daisy 777.

Monday starts the Dirty Harry league at the club. Any center fire pistol .32 and above. Most are .38 special of some sort and some old fashioned .45 acp. It’s at 50 ft on a B24 target?? The center X is red and about 5”-6” oval. Run-on the Bullseye format but different, the targets turn to start and turn when time is up. Use 5 minutes slow fire for 10 shots, 25 seconds timed fire twice for 5 shots each, 10 total and 15 seconds rapid fire twice for 5 rounds each, 10 total. It’s 30 round a match at 10 points every round for a high score of 300 points.

Start with revolvers down and when they turn you start Shooting. They added 5 seconds to timed and rapid over Bullseye because of the gun down and long trigger pull for DA shooting. We shoot 2 matches a night and it’s 7 weeks total. Out of the 14 you shoot, your 2 worst matches are dropped for your final average. Normally with practice it’s a 600 round event. Fun time, Larry

This year I will shoot the Manurhin mr73 only because I shoot it better then the S&W ‘s. I may use the Manurhin mr73 in .32 long once.

I like your match format, and the name!
Yeah, starting with the gun down, as per Int'l rules, yet still having the 5 shot sustained fired component of the American rules is a clever mix!
It is really quite sad how many clubs have entirely dropped Bullseye and Int'l pistol and now offer nothing but defensive/combat. Yeah, I call it "spray n pray"! A lot of newer shooters will never get any good because the sheer volume of fire they do, along with lousy trigger control and follow-through just ingrains poor habits.
Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice makes permanent!

Good for you guys keeping it going!!

Shot my best slow fire target this week, an 88 and for the first time in slow fire I kept all my shots in the black.

Of course, my rapid and timed fire look like they were shot with a skeet choke… next week is another chance to put it together. I’m consistently shooting in the top 5 now, about 50 points behind 1st (750’s vs his consistent 800-815 scores).

Nice shooting! I chuckle at your skeet choke pistol. I have one too. Sometimes it looks like I'm at a patterning board with a single-pellet shotgun.

At times, I exhibit my "other pastime" while on the line. Astronomy. Yeah, my targets can look like constellations . . . .

I have done the same for quite a few years. Air Pistol shooting is very demanding and can improve your bullseye shooting. There are postal league's you can participate in to give you the incentive to shoot your best. I use a IZH 46M (Biakal) .177 single stroke. These are great guns for entry lever prices. Capable of one hole groups at 10 meters. I only wish I would still have the capability to shoot it to it's capability.

Shot my first bullseye match last Monday with a brand new Browning buckmark 7.5 " barrel came in 5th out of ten competitors we shot at 25 yards the whole match because the lighting won't work out to 50 but i really liked the match and the guys were real helpful I shot cci standard but the gun shot some one hole groups when I did my sight in I actually shot much better at the rapid fire segment but that doesn't suprise me I am a real fast style shooter. Might try this with some other guns as well.
