Probably start out with only one Holster for a 686 SSR and would like your suggestions regarding a good Holster that would work for a "newbie" who wants to try the IDPA Shooting and would like to, if possible, use it also as a "general purpose" holster.

In the old days I would have automatically looked at a Bianchi Leather but not having been a shooter for these past 25 years, I'm not clear on what is popularly used these days and the whole IDPA thing will be an all new experience for me.
Don't even know if IDPA has specific rules on what is and what is not permitted ... but, I'd really like a "General Purpose" model.
I'll never be a big competitor in IDPA, that will really be just for Personal Satisfaction and plain old simple FUN.
Thanks

I use the Safariland 568 in SSR. IDPA Approved. Yes they have specific equipment rules.

Can I use my Galco with thumbsnap retention for SSR in IDPA. I carried my 686 in it for about a year and like it, but prefer positive retention for moving drills. Will this slow me down too much or is the safety consideration worth it?

You can use that Galco. If you are acustom to using it then there should not be any problem. The only thing is that if you have a retention device it must be used.

Just got to love this site ... great for a newbie like me.
Ask a question and you get great answers, even with pictures to illustrate, and, even better yet, another person asks a follow on question that was exactly what you were also wondering about.
Great site ... thanks to all for your replies.

As a match director, I'd like to emphasize this TWICE.

If the the holster has a retention device, it MUST be used.

Many newcomers to an IDPA match start leaving the retention strap open because they realize they are giving away a couple of seconds, and that is a safety violation.

Also, there is NO additional safety factor for a typical unfitted holster with a retention strap to a fitted holster without one. With a proper fitted holster, the shooter can be very active.

Finally, NO IDPA course of fire should be designed to require reholster after the gun is drawn, until the string is finished and the timer is stopped. Once you draw, you do the string of fire with the gun drawn.

Unless you can't afford a proper fitted holster, I'd rather you didn't show up with a cheap unfitted holster with a strap.

I use the Blade Tech paddle holster for my 4" 686 CS-1 in ICORE and IDPA. It will also hold the 617 that I practice with and my 3" Model 66 if I tighten down the screws.
