S&w 617 accuracy question
I have a 1991 617 8-3/8 barrel what kind of accuracy can someone squeeze out of these revolvers with the right ammo and the right action work ? I shoot one hole groups with my freedom arms at 25&50 yards with Norma match is it unreasonable to expect anything close with this revolver ?
Thanks

Yes, if everything is right on the gun. Nothing new here, it's been the same forever. Good forcing cone, good muzzle crown, good rifling, no barrel constriction, good timing, right cylinder throats, etc.
All calibers of revolver can be match grade shooters if they are mechanically correct. Sadly, many don't come from the factory that way.

Yes I shot mine yesterday it shot extremely well I'm surprised actually I shot some groups that would have been one hole if not for a flyer or human error open sights are tough for groups that tight with these stock open sights.

I put my 617-6 along side my 1954 K22 and my previous 17-4 and they all shot the same. Ammo selection is critical, as you know .22's can be finicky. I find standard velocity "usually" works the best.

My 617 shoots pretty well with CCI SV. This group is with a 12 MOA dot on my C-More site at 25 yards off a bench.

I know this an older thread but after doing all my gunsmithing on the 617 I removed the scope after it was shooting so great I went back to open sights and I am shocked how accurate this revolver is I was shooting steel at 25,50,75 and a 100 off hand a couple weeks ago and I could barely miss this revolver has become my favorite in a hurry I'm headed back tomorrow while I still have some decent morning weather here in Arizona. I'm definitely going to find a 648 and do the action on it too this gun is on par with my freedom arms revolvers well pretty darn close anyway !

In my old IHMSA days my 617 would shoot a little over 3" at 100 yards if I didn't use the bad chamber. The FA revolvers would shoot about half that.

Actually, my F.A.- 252 is a stud with either cylinder 22lr or 22 mag but the mag can shoot incredible groups out to 300 yards off the bench it's an older 10" that is one gun along with the 617 that's not going anywhere !!

My 617 shoots equal to my 10-22, and better than my American 22 bolt action (haven't found the brand it likes, yet). My 1947 K-22 Masterpiece equals my 617 on most days, and at 76 years old, I'm sometimes in awe of the small groups it shoots.

I'm really surprised they went away with the longer barrels I personally shoot much better with a longer barrel I won't buy a short barreled revolver any more !

I don't think I ever shot my 617 for groups, just to get the sights adjusted. It hits everything I aim it at if I don't flub the trigger press. This reminds me... I need to get it out and shoot it.

Any rim-fire S&W revolver should be capable of 1" or smaller groups at 25 yards with good ammunition and if the shooter is competent. There are exceptions naturally! Too many are too ready to blame the gun for inaccuracy when they are the problem.

I just realized I worded my July post oddly. I'm 73. The revolver is 76. Just learned yesterday that the first guns off the new assembly at S&W, post WWII, were in 1947, and some of the earliest were K-22 Target Masterpieces. Now even happier to have a 1947 K-22 and a 1948 K-38.
