Digitized Records of S&W, 1932-1941

The records of S&W for the years, 1932-1934, have been completed and can be searched for information. These years are in addition to the years, 1935-1941.

If anyone is interested in having their gun researched, you should follow the instructions on the S&WHF website. We have had great success researching Registered Magnums as S&W kept quite a few documents on these guns, but our success with other models has been hit and miss.

There is no charge if we look up your gun and don't find anything.

We will continue to digitize and index the records of S&W (beginning with 1931 and working back to approximately 1920) that are housed at the Museum of Springfield History as funding becomes available. The Board of Trustees is currently discussing ways to raise additional funds, but it is a difficult and lengthy process.

Greetings everyone, This is my very first post....hope I do it correctly. I have recently came into possession of a nickle plated S&W Police positive w/ 4" bbl. in .32 long. Nice, small old gun but I have no idea of manufacture date. sn# 873xx. It is a nice shooter and would rate about 85% nickle finish and otherwise hasn't been shot much. barrel is pristine. Can anyone help me with a date of manufacture and approx. value? Mike

Welcome to the forum, but we need some clarification. The Police Positive was a Colt model, not S&W, but after a brief period of proprietary isolation it was offered in the .32 S&W cartridge. There were small frame .32 S&W revolvers, but the ones called the Regulation Police had serial numbers quite a bit higher than yours. Can you describe other features of the gun? For example, the latest patent date you can read on the barrel, that kind of thing. Also, check the flat underside of the barrel and the rear face of the cylinder. Those should have the same serial number as the one you see stamped on the butt of the gun (or the forestrap, in the case of revolvers with extension stocks).
