Default Death Of Retired FBI, Walt Merritt

Good morning all:

I am saddened to report the death of my good friend, retired FBI special agent, Walt Merritt of Alabama on 1/12/15 after a long bout with cancer. I know Walt had been in contact with forum members here (and maybe other threads) over the years and as some might know, he was a big fan of S&W history, FBI history and the registered magnum in particular. Walt and I spent many an hour back and forth over the last many years in search of Bureau related firearms history. Perhaps some here may have met Walt at gun shows.

Walt was born in Long Island, New York on Dec. 14, 1942, served in the US
Army, SP 4, 1963-1965, 1st Cav., with a tour in Viet Nam.

Walt attended and graduated from Athens State University in 1969. He fell
in love with the area, stayed and worked in the Athens area for a while.

Walt became a Special Agent with the FBI in 1970 and served in Springfield,
Ill., East St. Louis, Ill., Detroit, MI and retired in 1997 while serving in
Tampa, FL.

Cards and letters of condolence may be mailed to Debbie Merritt, 27856 Abby
Lane, Anderson, Al. 35610.

Donations may be made in Walt's name to the Society of Former Special AgentsFoundation, attn.: Disaster Relief Fund. Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc.

Best

Larry Wack
FBI - Ret. 68-03

Walt was a great guy, a solid rock. We spent many hours reliving the old days when he would come to our shop in B'ham to hang out and share what he'd learned while researching old S&W's.

RIP, Walt -
David

Sorry for the loss of your friend Larry. He definitely sounds like one of the good guys and there are never enough of those around.

A sad day.
I used to shoot with Walt in Huntsville.
I remember him for his .38 Super and his stash of elderly ammo.

Searching for some S&W info lead me to this place. Its digging up and old thread, but I think its worth it.

I want to thank you all for your kind words. Walt was my dad.

He taught me to shoot from a young age and Im still at it to this day. I was literally at the range today with my husband.

He loved his career in the Bureau and could never get enough of the history of firearms. He was always searching for more info, especially historic guns or guns that had a personal history. I guess that bug got passed to me, as thats how I found this forum.

Thanks again for your kind words all!

Wendi

If is the same .38 Super, I was shooting it back in the 80s! And a lot of that 'stash' has been relocated from his home to mine.
