Default Info on M&P

I have a M&P that shipped in 1946. The factory letter states "This order was for 2 units in the above configuration and was a state county order and was marked for Vern D. Atkins."

Through my research I have learned that Mr. Atkins was a deputy sheriff and at one time also the sheriff of Richardson County, NE. Is it possible that there might be some correspondence between Mr. Atkins and S&W since the order was "marked" for him and is noted in the factory letter?

We have not started digitizing and indexing the war years, 1942-1946. It will most likely be the end of 2017 before they are started.

I know it's speculation, but is that wording something that you have seen before that has resulted in documentation?

Thanks Doc.

Often a shipping invoice will specify an individual to receive the shipment. Usually, an M&P revolver will only have the invoice listed. It is unusual to find correspondence, but you never know until you look.

Back then, what would be a normal time span between manufacture and shipping ?

John...I have researched many revolvers in the pre-war records and read many pieces of correspondence. However, the information does not provide an answer to your question since there is really nothing pertaining to when a revolver was made, only when it was shipped. In some cases the time between when an order was received and the guns were shipped is only a day or two (guns in inventory), but sometimes it is several months meaning the guns were out stock and had to be manufactured.
