Try reading this post it may explain how the "letters" work better than I can. I am not sure if the records are available for 1912 yet. Someone with more knowledge than I should be along shortly.
Fill me in on letters please...

It was common for ammunition manufacturers to purchase various firearms to test their cartridges. Some had impressive inventories and many were sold off over the years.
I saw a lovely Colt 1905 last year that was marked WCC (Western Cartridge Company), but 6K was more than I was willing to spend.

Records of the S&WHF only go back to 1920 so we cannot help with the first question. I will research the serial number to see if anything comes up and let you know.

I researched the serial number up through 1946, but nothing came up for a .22 with that serial number.

Verne...If you want to donate (tax deductible), send a check payable to the S&WHF to: S&WHF, P. O. Box 1494, Great Bend, KS 67530. We should have PayPal available by the end of June if you would prefer to use that. I can send the information in a few weeks.
The S&WHF is a 501 (c)(3) organization.

Hello All,
I, like most of you love guns but have a CRUSH on S&W!! I have a collection of the semi-autos (model 39, 59 etc.) and need to know how one goes about finding the history of my guns. Not sure if those records exist to great detail but I want as much detail as I can get. Is there a book, or website?
I hope I'm posting correctly here.

Whitepony...You can request a letter of authenticity for each of your firearms. The letter will verify the finish, barrel length and tell you where and when the auto was shipped. The S&WHF records can be researched to see if the invoice for each of your firearms is available. If it is (invoices are available up through 1967), a copy can be provided for a small fee. Members of the S&WHF will receive a copy of the invoice (if available) with each letter of authenticity. A lifetime membership in the S&WHF costs as little as $100 and is tax deductible.
You can also purchase the 4th Edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas. It has quite a bit of information on all of the models produced by S&W from the beginning of their partnership.
