Default S&W German export guns

I recently purchased a revolver that included a Jinks letter from 1991. The only information provided in the letter (aside from the blah, blah, blah generic to the model) was that the company records showed that the gun was shipped from the factory to Smith and Wesson GBMH on July 25, 1972. There was no mention of all the special order features on this gun.

Is that as good as it gets? I feel sorry for the gent who paid to receive such little information, but then again there are no guarantees with what info was kept.

I do know that it made a stop in the German Proof House.

Are the German records available on that side of the Atlantic?

Thanks much.

Is there any way to further research where this gun went once it reached Germany? I do know that it made a stop in the German Proof House.

sorry, there might be no chance to find more information in Germany about those guns. In Germany guns are evil and their registration dates are top secret due to data protection. Only stampings like proof marks etc might help a little.
Can you post photos of all the stamping?

regards from Germany
Ulrich

No, what I am really asking is why no mention of all the factory special order features that this gun has. Is it customary for export gun info to just include the shipping date? I will rephrase some of my post.

My guess is the gun was ordered by a US service member and eventually delivered to the base PX. It would be cool to know which base. The gun ended up back here in the states, in unfired condition.

Just a guess.. It did go to a PX and sold to a service member.

I had a model 28-2 that went through Wischo, some times the guns were shipped back, packed with household goods. and the trail ended at the importer.

WAIMEX is the current main importer. In business since about 2010. Don't think they cpould be of help. The gun could rather have a importer stamping AKAH or WISCHO, maybe Belgian proof marks, maybe German. Possibly further stamping that indicates where it was going in Germany...

best regards
Ulrich

I agree, the destination after it was received and proofed in Germany won’t be discovered. But I sure am glad it made it back to the states and into my collection.
Ulrich, danke!

Special order features on the revolver should be defined on the shipping invoice and if properly described when the letter was requested should be mentioned. What special features are on the revolver?

The 3 Ts, white outline rear sight, red post front sight. See my thread ‘Something Wicked Cool This Way Comes’ for photos etc.
Thanks Bill.

Letters back then did not say much. I would spend the $100 to get a new letter. DESCRIBE the gun when you send for it. Then, ask Bill to search the SWHF records for any other data.

I have a Pre Model 15 with German Import stamps on it. Would it be worthwhile to get the letter? Thanks.
