Default Collectable S&W ammo?

Before I shoot this stuff up, I thought I would check to see if has any collector value. I have three boxes of 9 mm Nyclad and one different box of ball.
I would appreciate any info provided.
Thanks

I found numerous boxes of Nyclad .38 Specials and .38 +P SWC's in my ammo box in similar cartons. What's the word on this ammo?

Default S&W ammo

From what I've seen, the .22 LR and shotgun ammo made by S&W back in the 70's is fairly collectible. The large rifle and pistol calibers are next. .357 and .38 seem more common and sellers I see don't ask a premium for it.

Pages 388 - 389 of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson Third Edition gives a nice background on this ammo. It also states "Of special interest to collectors are unusual loads such as the .38 Special Chiefs Special load, shotgun slugs, and the nylon-jacketed Nyclad line of ammunition. Currently, S&W brand ammunition can often be picked up at the same price as comparable current production commercial ammunition, but collector interest is increasing somewhat and may affect pricing in the future."

I do look for it at shows and buy if the price is right. I shy away from paying extra since it can be hard to tell factory new from reloads. It's been fun, affordable S&W collecting. Eventually I'd like a complete set but have a ways to go.

Todd

Thank you for the info. I don't have any real need to shoot my S&W ammo right now. I guess I will keep them around for a while.

S&W magazine ad about the Nyclad ammo reads:
".....It's Smith & Wesson's revolutionary breakthrough Nyclad ammunition. With nylon jacketed bullets that dramatically reduce leading, bore fouling and smoke. And slash poisonous lead oxide emissions, a hazard on indoor ranges, to a minimum. All the while maintaining Smith & Wesson's coveted accuracy, velocity and energy..."

I picked up a full, unfired, original box of .38 Special wad cutters in a blue and white S&W box at a gun show a week ago. The price was right and my intent was to just shoot them. Then it began to sink in that I had never seen ammunition in a S&W box before so I have been looking for some history and value information. I have found the information hard to come by and thought I would present my questions in this forum. Also, I hate to just burn them up if they have collector value to someone. I'm not out to stick it to anyone, just want to make them available if they happen to be of value to a S&W collector. Any information anyone could provide would be appreciated.

"The're not making it anymore" is the key word here. S&W ammo. is collectable and some of it is almost unheard of - try to find 20 and 28 ga. shotgun ammo! I buy any S&W ammo and Alcan ammo I see for sale at gun shows, if it's not premium priced. Ed.

Default .38 Wadcutters

If you have an interest in box of .38 wadcutters, we'll have to find a way to get in touch. To the best of my knowledge, everything about the box and ammo is original.

This message is intended for Ed. Thanks for the welcome, Kenny.

I have over 200 boxes of S&W ammo. I have Wads, powder, heads and primers. I have one .410 round. I buy them whenever I seen any. Maybe someday I'll be rich, but, as of today they are selling at retail.

I would love to find some S&W ammo to add to my collection. I can't imagine why anyone would shoot it, since it's definitely collectible...
