Vintage S&W watch? Antiqe? Fake?
saw this watch for sale. I am not into S&W watches so I have to ask.
Looks much older than most S&W watches I see. Note the outer circle with the Smith and Wesson text.
Anyone: is this something to buy? Anyone seen one before? Value?

I've never seen one like this before, but my guess is it is not an antique.
Cheers;

It looks like it says "Quartz" on the face. Is it battery operated?

Ah, looks old is not.
Asked the seller, says it's from the 80-ties.
Still, I would lik to know if it is a S&W or fake.

It's probably not worth much, but it looks neat.

My take is it was priced right, I probably would have got it. Don't who would go to that level to "fake" it? Especially with the Smith & Wesson on the bazel. Is it missing a hand?

I've been told by some of the more knowledgeable S&WCA members that during the 1980's S&W's marketing department did some "unusual" approvals to sub-contractors. Scrimshaw buckles for RailRoads are an example. Never say never. It's a real neat item & if it was reasonable I'd buy it, just because it's unusual. JMHO

I have S&W watch catalogs going back to 1990 and it's not shown in any of them, so the seller's estimate of a 1980s birth era may well be correct. S&W's licensing dep't management has changed many times since the 1980s, so trying to get a verification or records of what items were licensed then, or before then, is useless. Replica watches were a big thing in the 1970s & 80s and I note this watch does not show the S&W logo, which is a copyrighted logo, and use of it w/o S&Ws permission usually resulted in a cease and desist notice from S&W, if they could locate the doer. An item w/o the logo is a fair indication it is not a S&W product, as just the use of the Smith & Wesson name on something will not usually get you in trouble with S&W, unless the item is a copy of something S&W makes and is selling. Ed.

It would be intersting to me to see a photo of the reverse side of this watch. It also appears that it says QUARTX on the face and not QUARTZ, however, that might be my old eyes.
In my youth while working at the local service station, a gentleman came in selling what were purported to be OMEGA watches for a very reasonable price. Since they were like a ROLEX back then, I took the leap of faith and bought one. Unfortunately, after the man left I attempted to wind the watch and it was like winding a cement mixer. I also noticed that after moving the hands to set the correct time, the minute hand had cleverly covered the beginning of the watches name and the the actual name of the watch was CIMEGA. Most likely made in some far off Asian country.

Hi James,
I bought it, received it and it was nothing. Junk, like you stated.
It went were it belonged.
I should not bought it on bad pictures.

Hey, it was worth a try, unless you missed a mortgage payment,
or something. I'm a sucker for stuff like that, but only up to a very
limited $ amount. Sometimes have to throw stuff away, too.
Next time you take a chance, it'll be the real deal. TACC1

Antique or not I think it's pretty cool. I'd like to be able to carry some more antique looking watches in my store. Any suggestions where to find more like this?
