I need some information on this knife. I am setting up a display this year on old 1st and 2nd gereration knives of Smith and Wesson at the OGCA display show. I have very little information on this knife. This is the only one I have seen besides the one proof listed in my Knives of Smith and Wesson book but it list no information in there either, just a picture. Any info would be great. Thanks, Sean

Your knife is based on a Model 6010 S&W Bowie knife, as designed by Blackie Collins, and is a prototype that lead to the Collector Series of custom engraved and etched knives. The handle is Wessonwood, a patented faux wood. As you say, it is pictured in Rinke's book on S&W knives, page 98. There were a number of different designs submitted for the Series, your knife being the Jim Bowie design. Ed.

Thank you Ed, So this is a knife made fore the collectors series, but was not accepted. It is marked Dillingham but it is not marked proof like my other prototype collectors series knives. I wonder how many of this design was produced?

Bill Gunn, Pres. of S&W, met with Walter "Blackie" Collins in 1972 to discuss S&W's entry into the knife market. Blackie submitted a number of different design ideas - how many, I don't know, but certainly more than one. The S&W archived correspondence for that period may reveal the quantity, etc. Unfortunately, we can't ask Blackie, as he was killed last summer in a motorcycle accident. Ed.

Gents, all of the Blackie Collins knives were benchmade, not the company which evolved from Pacific Cutlery, but truly benchmade, as in built by hand by a team of artisans.

seanbetsy, I'm looking forward to your display. Very few displays at our annual meetings have ever concentrated on knives, so it will attract attention, I'm sure. The "Holy Grail" of S&W knives is the ferrule used to create a spear attachment for a Blackie Collins bowie. ( See pages 94-95 in "The Knives of S&W" by Rinke.) Will you have one of these in your display? Ed.

No I have yet to come across one. I always keep my eyes open though.
