Default cowboy action shooting knife

I've recently become active in Cowboy Action Shooting.I still need one item- a distinctive knife.I need a source for this.I'd prefer a antique American Indian made trade knife with a beaded sheath. Not really interested in a new knife-too shiney.

You might be able to find one of the original English Sheffield made Bowies, form the time period.

They were quite popular back in the day.

Or you might take a look at the Cold Steel Bowie knives they offer.

I think Dexter-Russell still makes their old Dadley and Green River patterns. You'll have to make the sheath, or have it done. But you'll have what an Indian or trapper would in the 1840-1880 period.

Real antique Bowies are very expensive. And most look pretty bad for a carry knife. Few lack rust spots or pitting.

If you want a modern knife, the Fallkniven NL line look MUCH better than Cold Steel's stuff. They resemble Randall's leather- handled models. www.fallkniven.com They have US dealers, and prices are often less than shown, which are listed in Swedish kroner. I suggest the NL-2. The balance is so good that it feels lighter than it is. It moves well in the hand.

Again, you'll need to make or have made an authentic sheath. Look in the knife mags for sheathmaker ads.

The American Bladesmith Society members can make you a "period" knife, but be prepared to pay from $450-up. Mostly, 'WAY up... A Fallkniven NL is also expensive, but very good. I'd rather have an NL-2 than most custom knives, and there's no waiting period for it to be made.

If you want something very authentic to the period, look up Swamp Fox Knives. It is owned by a blacksmith named Tim Ridge. He hand forges period knives. His work is second to none. Ive carried his blades at NCOWS , SASS, and RGA events and always get high praise for the blades' authenticity.

Hand Forged Knives, Swamp Fox Knives- Tim Ridge

He posts one or two new knives a week. He will build one to order as well.

Depending on how much you want to spend. Inexpensive: look at Crazy Crow Trading Post (or something like that) or the Russell Green Rivers. A carbon blade can be darkened with lemon juice or little diluted vinegar. Just oil well after application.

Marbles has some pretty authentic looking ones, also.

But, Green River WILL be authentic all right!

I made my own.

Blade and buffalo horn handle by Jantz knife parts. "Skull crusher" is a Celtic Concho matching the holster and sheaf (also hand/home made)

I looked at the Swamp Fox site--I think those are perfect for what the OP is looking for. Really neat stuff. You can tell he researches those patterns carefully. The prices are reasonable for that kind of work as well.

Most guys that make knives can make them look old/frontier style. Plus you can get a one of a kind. I enjoy blacksmithing/bladesmithing.

Someone needs to jump on Swap Fox's Stag Handle Bowie or else I'm going to blow my gun money on a completely impractical and senseless impulse purchase ...

Had my camera and lighting equipment out today, so I thought I'd take a picture of my Swamp Fox collection.
